The enormous mosaic mural is the focal point of the mezzanine in the Times Square subway complex. Its shimmering and detailed surface pays tribute to the diversity and strength of New York City - its neighborhoods, cultural life, recreational pleasures, love of sports and, of course, its subway system. New York in Transit was Jacob Lawrence's last public work. In it he evokes city life seen from an elevated train and the sensitive and loving portrait shows a slice of city life and is a parting gift to New York City, seen by millions of people who live and visit here.

Untappe New York

Another figurative mosaic in the station is New York in Transit (2001) by Jacob Lawrence. The twentieth-century African American painter’s style is instantly recognizable: the flattened, graphic shapes; the vivid, fully-saturated colors; the layered yet shallow representation of space. The artist’s last public work, the mosaic represents the similarly layered life of the city-----its simultaneity and convergence with gestures and overlap and noise.  Also don’t miss Jane Dickson’s “The Revelers” featuring multiple mosaic figures, meant to represent New Year’s Eve revelry.

Jacob Lawrence’s bold, graphic paintings imbue their African American subjects with vast emotional depth. The artist’s socially engaged, narratively rich works drew on the legacies of Social Realism and Mexican muralism. Inspired by the ethos of the Harlem Renaissance, Lawrence depicted icons of Black liberation such as Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, and he also rendered his mid-century Harlem community at large.

His 60-panel “The Migration of the Negro” series (1940–41)—arguably his most famous work—depicts the Depression-era flight of Black southerners to northern states. Lawrence became one of the first Black artists to be represented by a mainstream, downtown New York City gallery. His work belongs in the collections of the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. In 2007, his painting The Builders (1947) was acquired by the White House Collection.

The Builders

American artist Jacob Lawrence was born in 1917. The artist grew up in Harlem during the Depression. Harlem was an active cultural center then, and Lawrence became interested in the arts while still a teenager. He received early training at art workshops sponsored by the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

WPA(Works Progress Administration)が主催するアートワークショップで早くから絵の勉強をしていました。

Lawrence's subject matter and painting style remained relatively consistent through his career. His subjects range from street scenes to the lives of African Americans to powerful narrative series. The artist's intent is to convey his feelings about the subjects portrayed. As Lawrence said, "My pictures express my life and experience. I paint the things I know about and the things I have experienced."
