今日は、これから始まる、「夏のリーディングコンテスト」についてです。
世界中から応募できるので、日本の中高生もチャレンジできます。
生徒ばかりでなく、英語の先生にも是非知っていただきたいニューヨークタイムズの取り組みです。

Our 14th Annual Summer Reading Contest
第14回「夏の読書コンクール」開催

Middle and high school students are invited to tell us what they’re reading in The Times and why. The contest runs from June 9 to Aug. 18.
（ニューヨークタイムズが）中高生を対象に、ニューヨークタイムズで読んだ記事の内容とその記事を選んだ理由をを書くコンテストを開催します。コンテストは6月9日から8月18日まで行われます。

Every year since 2010, The Learning Network has invited teenagers around the world to add The New York Times to their summer reading lists. So far, more than 90,000 have done so.

ラーニング・ネットワークは、2010年から毎年、世界中の10代の若者にニューヨーク・タイムズを夏の読書リストに加えるよう呼びかけています。これまでに9万人以上がこのコンテストに参加しています。

If you are looking for ways to offer students more “voice and choice,” we hope our open-ended contest can help. Every week, we ask participants to choose something in The Times that has piqued their interest, and then tell us why. At the end of the week, judges from the Times newsroom and The Learning Network pick their favorite responses, and we publish them. It’s that simple.

生徒たちにもっと「ボイス（意見を言える）とチョイス（選択できる）」を提供する方法をお探しなら、私たちの特に制約のないコンテストに参加してみてください。毎週、ニューヨークタイムズの中で興味を持ったものを選んで、その理由を書いてください。週明けに、ニューヨークタイムズのニュースルームとラーニング・ネットワークの審査員が、良いと思った回答を選び、それを掲載します。とてもシンプルなことです。

Though our goals include some that appear on many educators’ lists — helping students become more aware of the world and their place in it; learning how to navigate sophisticated nonfiction; and practicing writing for an audience — we also hope that students will realize that reading the newspaper can be fun.

私たちの目標は、多くの教育関係者が挙げているように、次のようなものです。生徒が世界とその中での自分の立場をより意識するようになること、洗練されたノンフィクションを読みこなす方法を学ぶこと、読者に向けて書く練習をすることなどです。そして、生徒が新聞を読むことは楽しいことだと気づいてくれることも願っています。

As you’ll see in the guidelines below, students can choose anything that was published on NYTimes.com in 2023. We don’t care if they pick a piece about Ukraine or U.S. politics; college or cats; happiness or hairstyles; music or mental health. We just care about why they chose it.

以下のガイドラインにあるように、2023年にNYTimes.comに掲載されたものであれば、何でも選んでいただけます。ウクライナやアメリカの政治、大学や猫、幸せやヘアスタイル、音楽やメンタルヘルスなど、どんな記事を選んでもかまいません。ただ、なぜそれを選んだのかが重要なのです。

Here’s how the contest works:
コンテストは次のように行なわれます。

1. Every Friday beginning on June 9, we will publish a post asking the same question: “What got your attention in The Times this week?” That’s where you should post an answer any time until the following Friday at 9 a.m. Eastern, when we will close that post to comment and open a new one that asks the same question. On Aug. 11 we’ll post our final question of the summer, open until 9 a.m. on Aug. 18.

6月9日から毎週金曜日に、「今週、タイムズ紙で注目したものは何ですか？」という同じ質問がを載せます。 翌週の金曜日午前9時（アメリカ東部時間）のコメント受付が終了するまでならいつでもいいので、その質問に対する回答を投稿してください。その後は（新しい記事に対する）新しい投稿の受付となります。8月11日に、この夏最後の質問を掲載し、8月18日の午前9時が最終受付となります。

2. You can choose anything you like that was published in the print paper or on NYTimes.com in 2023, including articles, Op-Eds, videos, graphics, photos and podcasts. To see the variety of topics winners have written about over the years, read this column.

記事、Op-Ed、ビデオ、グラフィック、写真、ポッドキャストなど、2023年に紙面やNYTimes.comに掲載されたものから、好きなものを選んでください。受賞者が今まで書いたトピックについて知るには、こちらを見てください。

3. You can participate as often as every week, but we allow only one submission per person per week.

毎週何度でも参加可能ですが、投稿は一人につき1週間に1回までとまります。

4. Responses must be 1,500 characters or fewer. We have a contest rubric as well as a guide for students that details four simple ways to make your response stand out.

回答は1,500文字以内とします。コンテストの説明と、回答を際立たせるための4つの簡単な方法を記した学生向けのガイドがあります。

5. Any teenager anywhere in the world is invited to join us, if you are in middle or high school, or if you graduated from high school in 2023 and haven’t started college yet. See below, How to Submit, for more details.

中学生、高校生、2023年に高校を卒業し、まだ大学に入学していない方など、世界中の10代なら誰でもどこの国の方でも参加できます。詳しくは下記の「投稿方法」をご覧ください。

6. Make sure to provide us with the complete URL or headline. For example, “The Queen of Everest Trains While Working at Whole Foods” or https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/31/sports/lhakpa-sherpa-everest.html.

7. Every Tuesday during the contest, starting June 27 and ending Aug. 29, we will publish the previous week’s winner or winners in a separate post you can find here. We will also celebrate the winners on Twitter and Facebook.

6月27日から8月29日までの期間中、毎週火曜日に、前週の受賞者を別のページ（こちら）で発表します。また、TwitterやFacebookでも受賞者をお知らせします。

8. The children and stepchildren of New York Times employees are not eligible to enter this contest. (Teenagers who live in the same household as a Times employee are also ineligible.)

ニューヨークタイムズ社員のお子様およびお子様に当たる方は、本コンテストに応募することはできません。(タイムズ社員と同居している10代の方も対象外です)。
