昨日に引き続いて、ニューヨークタイムズの「10代の最も良い所はどこですか？」という質問に実際に回答した10代の若者の意見を読んでいます。

For me, being a teen is amazing. It presents responsibilities while also allowing for great memories to be formed. Nothing beats biking around in the summer, Saturday night hangouts and swimming at the pool. 

私にとって、10代というのは素晴らしいときです。責任が伴う一方で、素晴らしい思い出を作ることができます。夏に自転車で走り回ること、土曜の夜にたむろすること、プールで泳ぐことよりいいことはありません。

Being a kid is a ride that keeps on getting better as more opportunities unfold as you age in your teen years. Although being an adult sounds fun at times, being a kid wins the battle 1000-1. If I had the choice I would not change to be an adult now because of all the fun I am having. You hear from people that are adults talking about things like taxes and bills. As a kid you don’t have to worry about that. All you have to do is live your life.

I’m 13 years old and the best thing about being my age is definitely exploring and just being adventurous. This is the age where my parents actually trust me enough to go outside in my neighborhood alone and I absolutely love it. Abandoned places, skateboarding, “our spots,” sunsets, the wind blowing in your face. All of those things I get to experience at this age. The age where I can explore the outside world with complete freedom but still being a kid, which means basically no responsibilities, no jobs, nowhere to be, nowhere to go. I love taking 30 minute walks around the same plaza outside my house with my best friend and I love playing volleyball at the park I’ve been to 20,000 times. In my opinion, being a kid is amazing.

I can choose what to wear, what to do, where to go, and who to hang out with. My parents think that I’m old enough to choose those kinds of things by myself. They don’t interrupt all my business as much as when I was very little. But at the same time, they help me when I get in trouble. Even though I make mistakes, I don’t have to take all the consequences alone. My parents are always by my side. They are responsible for my mistakes along with me.

何を着るのか、何をするのか、どこに行くのか、誰と遊ぶのか、そういうことを自分で選べるのです。両親は、私がそういうことを自分で選べる年齢になったと思っているので、私が幼い頃ほどには、私の事に口を挟んできません。でも、私が困ったときには助けてくれます。たとえ間違いを犯したとしても、その結果をすべて一人で背負う必要はありません。両親はいつもそばにいます。両親は私と一緒に過ちに責任を負ってくれるのです。

I’m 17 and think that it’s the perfect balance between being a fun teenager and also old enough to have responsibilities and do my own thing. I honestly wish that I could stay 17 forever because it’s the perfect age and I love being a teenage girl. I love being a cheerleader in high school, driving to get iced coffees, hanging out with my friends, shopping, going to games, and etc. Being an adult comes with a great load of responsibility and I just want to enjoy my youth and freedom while I still can.

Being seventeen, almost eighteen, is a scary age. You find yourself at the limit between being a young teenager and entering adulthood. There are a lot of times where you can feel confused about what your next step is going to be in life and how you’re going to deal with it. However, it is the perfect age if you think about it: you’re old enough to make your own decisions and do whatever you like without your parents being so strict, but you’re still too young to stress about issues that adults have to worry about.

17歳、もうすぐ18歳になるというのは怖いです。若いティーンエイジャーであることと同時に、大人になることの狭間にいることを分かっています。これからどう生きていけばいいのか、どう対処していけばいいのか、戸惑うことが多いです。しかし、考えてみればちょうどいい年齢です。親に厳しくされることなく、自分で判断して好きなことができる年齢だけれど、大人が持っている悩みでストレスを感じる年齢ではありませんからね。

The best thing about being my age, is the ability to easily and freely look at, and choose, what I want to do with my future. Being 17, my adulthood is soon starting, and now is a very important time because I get to explore and see what things, careers or hobbies work and don’t work for me. I get to figure out what I want to pursue in college, and overall I’m still learning me.

Personally, I consider that the best thing about being a teenager is that you are in a stage of life in which you are maturing and you are starting to be more independent. For instance, you can take public transport without an adult and you can even work and earn some money. In addition, another advantage of adolescence is that you are in a period of learning, since you are discovering how to be an adult and how the world around us works.
