Inside New York City's smallest store, Dr. Silkman's at 401 W. Broadway in SoHo, you'll find a few quirky items like a sink from an old penitentiary （刑務所）, shelves from a 19th-century church, and a taxidermy （剥製の）monkey. Occupying a total of 50 square feet, the eclectic （様々な要素を含んだ） store is meant to feel like an early 20th-century doctor's private study （書斎）, and you, the customer, are one of his most exclusive（特別な） clients. The shop is so small that if you stand in the center and stretch your arms out, you are likely to touch both walls at once!

ニューヨークで最も小さな店、ソーホー地区のブロードウェイ西401番地にあるドクター・シルクマンズには、古い刑務所のシンクや19世紀の教会の棚、剥製のおさるさんなど、一風変わった品々が並んでいます。総面積50平方フィート（約4.6平方メートル）のこの雑貨店は、20世紀初頭の医師のプライベートな書斎をイメージして作られており、来店した人は、つまりあなたはその医師の最も特別なクライアント、という設定です。店がとても狭いため、真ん中に立って両手を広げると、両方の壁に同時に手が届きそうです。

Dr. Silkman's was founded in 2003 by Zack Alper. After selling his goods at various markets in New York City, like the Bryant Park Winter Village, Alper opened his first brick-and-mortar（実店舗） store in October 2024. Situated (存在する） between an eyeglass store and a coffee shop, Dr. Silkman's sits inside a small space formerly occupied by a smoke shop and short-lived pizza place.

The store is stocked with a variety of self-care products like "jumbo handmade soaps, lip scrubs, deluxe shaving sundries（用品）, incredible beard care supplies," and their signature body lotion candle. The goods are handmade in small batches using natural and organic ingredients sourced in the United States. Even the packaging is made from recycled or recyclable materials.

Throughout the store, there are a variety of personal touches that transport the customer to another place and time. The face of Dr. Silkman's, the man with a cigar and bowler hat （山高帽）who appears on all of the packaging, is the founder's great-grandfather. The photo, which Alper found in an attic（屋根裏部屋）twenty years ago, dates to around 1910. A mirror and vintage suitcase on display in the store hide evidence of modern utilities, old books help fill the shelves, and wood from an up-cycled （リサイクルされた）church pew （信者席）still has gum on the bottom. Exposed brick walls, ornate（飾られた）wallpaper, and a reclaimed（再生された） tin （ブリキ）ceiling complete the turn-of-the-century aesthetic（美的感覚）.

店全体、カスタマーを別の場所や時代へと誘うさまざまな独特の趣向が施されています。パッケージのすべてに登場する葉巻と山高帽のシルクマン博士の顔は、創業者の曾祖父です。アルパー氏が20年前に屋根裏で見つけたこの写真は、1910年頃のものです。店内に飾られた鏡や年代物のスーツケースには現代の便利さを感じさせるものが全くありません。棚は古い本で埋め尽くされていて、教会の信者席をリサイクルした木材にはガムの跡が残っています。むき出しのレンガの壁、装飾を施した壁紙、再生されたブリキの天井が、世紀の変わり目の美的感覚を完成させています。

"Being the tiniest shop is really fun," said Dr. Silkman's Sales & Marketing Manager, Amy Foster. "I love to see people's reactions when they first see it. It also comes with its challenges. Every piece of furniture and item placement is intentional because there is such limited space. We utilized a lot of wall space to keep the shop as open as 50 square feet can be!"
