"Graffiti"（グラフィティ）というのは、次のような意味です。

rude, humorous, or political writing and pictures on the walls of buildings, trains etc

ビルや電車などの壁に無作法な、ユーモラスな、あるいは政治的な文字や絵を書くこと

これを日本語で「落書き」と言うといたずらの一部ととらえられ、一方、「グラフィティ」と言うと、芸術作品の一種ととらえられます。ニューヨークには、"Graffiti"で生計を立てている人もいて、ニューヨークの文化の一つとなっています。こうしたものは、許可を得て描いているものが多いです。

Tucked（隠された）discreetly（ひっそりと） between Chrystie Street and the Bowery, just off Rivington on the Lower East Side, Freeman Alley is easy to miss…until you see it, and then you cannot see anything else.

クリスティ・ストリートとボワリーの間、リヴィントンから少し離れたローワー・イースト・サイドに、ひっそりと目立たないフリーマン・アレイは、ほとんど気づかずに通り過ぎてしまいます…しかし、一度見ると、他のものが何も目に入りません。

At just 150 feet long, this narrow dead-end lane is an array（多量） of color and commentary（解説）, with layered walls of graffiti and stickers. More than a passageway, Freeman Alley is a living gallery—raw, rotating, and resolutely（断固として） democratic. It’s a visual archive of the city’s shifting moods: a place where past, present, and speculative（推測の） futures coexist in spray paint and pasted（貼る） paper.

わずか150フィートの長さしかないこの狭い行き止まりの路地は、グラフィティとステッカーが幾重にも重なり色彩とメッセージが詰まっています。単なる通路とは言えないフリーマン・アレイは、生きたギャラリーのような通りで、絶えず新鮮で、変化し続ける、あくまでも大衆の空間です。これは都市の移り変わる雰囲気を視覚的に記録したアーカイブ：スプレーペイントとステッカーで、そこに過去、現在、そして未来の想像が共存しています。

👩「ステッカー」について：グラフィティアートの世界では、「sticker art（ステッカーアート）」というジャンルがあって、「slaps---スラップス」とも呼ばれます。自分がデザインしたステッカーを壁や標識などに貼って、自分の作品を広める手法です。

While there is no official curator, the alley isn’t without order. Two informal stewards shape its flow: Zui orchestrates the back half, and THEALLEYRY guides the front.

正式な学芸員はいませんが、路地に秩序がないわけではありません。2人の非公式な管理者がその流れを誘導しています：ズーイが路地の後方半分を担当し、THEALLEYRYが前方を担当しています。

Zui sees the alley artwork as ephemeral（はかない）, “Just like in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom for such a brief period,” he says, “you have to catch that moment before it disappears and the next flower takes the spotlight. The same thing happens in the alley—each opportunity makes space for new art to shine.”

ズーイは路地のアートをはかないものとして捉えています。「春に桜が短い間だけ咲くのと同じように」、「それが消える前にその瞬間を捉えなければ、次の花が注目を浴びてしまう。路地でも同じです。——次々に新しいアートが輝くためのスペースが作られます」とズーイは言います。

Last Sunday, the alley was a hive（活動が活発な場所）of activity, buzzing（ガヤガヤ話す） with artists and admirers. Here is a sampling of the artists who were painting and visiting the alley that one afternoon:　

Kenji

先週の日曜日、路地はアーティストと彼らのファンでごった返し、活気に満ちていました。その日の午後、路地にやって来てペインティングをしていたアーティストの一部を紹介します。まず・・・

“Freeman Alley is a space for people to express their creativity and meet new and interesting people from all around the world.”

「フリーマン・アレイは、人々が創造性を表現し、世界中から集まる面白いい新人に出会える場所です。」と、彼は言います。

Introduced to the alley by Zui, the Malaysian graffiti artist Kenji was painting his puppet（人形） Chaigo (aka（別称：also known as）his alter ego（分身）) on the wall to the right of the entrance to the Untitled Hotel. Hotel guests and diners from Freemans Restaurant paused to snap photos. Bowery Mission staff occasionally passed through the very door he was painting over. None of it broke his stride.

Jappy

ケンジは、ズーイからこの路地を紹介されたマレーシア出身のグラフィティアーティストです。アンタイトルド・ホテルの入り口の右側の壁に、「Chaigo（チャイゴ）」（自分の分身を表す人の姿）を描いていました。ホテルの宿泊客やフリーマンズレストランのお客さんたちが、足を止めて写真を撮っていました。バワリー・ミッション（バワリーにある慈善団体）のスタッフが時々、彼が絵を描いているドアの前を通り過ぎて行きます。しかし、ケンジはまったく動じることなく、絵を描き続けました。

Jappy

次は、ジャッピーです。

Jappy, an artist from the Philippines, stopped by to visit Kenji and commented, “Freeman allows people from all walks of life（あらゆる職業や地位） to experience street art—whether you're a seasoned（ベテランの） artist looking for a spot between projects or a kid just discovering the art form.” He continued, “It creates a bridge between artists and audiences.”

フィリピン出身のアーティスト、ジャッピーがケンジを訪ねてきて、次のようにコメントしました。「フリーマン・アレイは、あらゆる背景の人々がストリートアートを体験できる場を提供しています。プロジェクトの合間に場所を探しているベテランアーティストでも、アートフォームを初めて発見した子供でも、誰もが参加できます。」彼は続けて、「アーティストと観客の間に橋を架ける役割を果たしています。」

StickerMaul, also known as PhotoMaul, uses her weekend city walks to decompress（展開する） and explore the street art scene. As she strolls, she puts up her own stickers and snaps pics（写真を撮る）. This Sunday, she stopped by the alley to check out new pieces and leave a sticker, but ended up sticking around to chat with Zui and friends.

フォトマウルとして知られる、ステッカーマウルは、週末の街を歩いて自分のストリートアートを展開できる場所を探していました。彼女は街を歩きながら自分の（作品の）ステッカーを貼り、写真を撮ります。今週末、彼女は新しい作品を見に路地を訪れ、自分のステッカー貼るつもりだったのですが、ズーイや友人たちとおしゃべりに夢中になってしまいました。
