日本の伝統的なスポーツである、「相撲」が世界で広まりつつあります。ニューヨークで、相撲クラブができたそうです。

........... the New York Sumo Club, which has brought the ancient combat sport to the city, giving its practitioners（実践者）a place to test their confidence, experience a mental boost, and perhaps most importantly, find a community, Mr. Lizardi said.

このクラブは、古代の格闘技をニューヨーク市に持ち込み、競技を行なうメンバーたちが自信を試す場を提供し、精神的に鍛えられるだけでなく、最も重要である、仲間を見つけることができる場となっていると、(クラブのメンバーである）リザルディは言いました。

The Empire Cup, held by the New York Sumo Club on May 17, drew countless spectators who munched（ムシャムシャ食べる） on snacks, some sipping on beers, as they cheered on 56 athletes, who fought for a trophy and, mostly, bragging（自慢する） rights.

5月17日にニューヨーク相撲クラブ主催で開催された「エンパイア・カップ」には、スナックを食べたり、ビールを飲みながら、トロフィーと栄誉を懸けて戦う56人の選手を応援する数多くの観客が集まりました。

The one-day competition was the culmination（成就）of three years of hard work by Oscar Dolan, the club’s founder, who is a wrestler himself and a former U.S. lightweight silver medalist.

この1日限りの大会は、クラブの創設者で自身も力士であり、元アメリカ軽量級銀メダリストのオスカー・ドランの3年間にわたる努力の結晶として開催されたものです。

Mr. Dolan, 25, who majored in Japanese in college, said he became a sumo fan after a project he did in 2019 on Enhō Yūya, a popular lightweight sumo wrestler at the time. After a few years, Mr. Dolan wanted to try it for himself. He founded the organization in 2022 after realizing there weren’t any amateur sumo wrestling clubs in the city.

25歳のドラン氏は大学で日本語を専攻し、2019年に当時人気の軽量級相撲取りである炎鵬友哉に関するプロジェクトをきっかけに相撲のファンになったと言いました。数年後、ドラン氏は自身で相撲に挑戦したいと考え、市内にアマチュア相撲クラブがないことに気づき、2022年に同団体を設立しました。

“I had to start my own, kind of begrudgingly（しぶしぶ） at first, but, you know, starting my own made me get so much more into it,” he said.

「始めは一人でした。渋々やってたといった感じでしたが、のめり込むようになったんです」と彼は言いました。

The New York Sumo Club has grown steadily since its inception（開始）, even accounting for hiccups（小さな困難）, Mr. Dolan said. The club has about 100 wrestlers, with around 20 regulars. 

ニューヨーク相撲クラブは、設立以来、いくつかの困難はありましたが着実に成長してきましたと、ドラン氏は述べました。クラブには約100人のファイターがが在籍し、そのうち約20人がレギュラーです。

The club even has its own genuine portable dohyō, a sumo wrestling ring, (....略....） , which is handmade and imported from Japan, and is similar to those used by wrestlers there.

そのクラブには、日本から輸入した手作りの移動可能な土俵があり、実際の力士が使用するものと似ています。

👩相撲関連の備品等は、三福（さんぷく）商事が販売しているようです。プロ力士のまわしから子供用のまわし、簡易土俵などが購入できるようです。（まわしの値段も分かりますよ。）

Over the years, sumo has gained in popularity around the world, though it remains closely linked to Japanese tradition and culture. Despite that fact, many young people in Japan may see it as old-fashioned. On Wednesday, Onosato Daiki of Japan was named yokozuna, or grand champion, the highest title in the sport. He’s the first Japanese yokozuna in eight years, and only the second in 27 years.

何年も前から、相撲は世界中で人気を博してきましたが、依然として日本の伝統と文化と深く結びついています。しかし、そうした事実がある中で日本の若者の多くは相撲を古臭いものだと見なしているようです。水曜日、日本の大の里大樹が相撲の最高位である横綱として認められました。彼は8年ぶりの日本人横綱であり、27年ぶりの2人目の日本人横綱です。

Membership in the club is “mostly based on vibes（気持ち）,” Mr. Dolan said. Members pay a $20 mat fee per session, and if you show up at least once a month you’re considered a “regular.” There’s also a group chat for people who want to talk about sumo in their free time.

クラブの会員資格は「主にやる気次第」だと、ドラン氏は言っています。会員は1回につき$20の土俵マット使用料を支払い、月に1回以上参加すれば「レギュラー」とみなされます。また、空き時間に相撲について話したい人のためのグループチャットもあります。

ニューヨークで人気が出てきたとなると、全世界に波及してオリンピックの競技になるかもしれませんね。もちろん日本人力士が金メダルでしょうけれど・・・。(^_^)
