120年前を体験！ニューヨーク市を走った地下鉄！

ニューヨークは、去年地下鉄誕生120周年を迎えました。6sqftのサイトが、ニューヨークの地下鉄の歴史を振返っています。

“The Subway Is…” also analyzes how the subway is effectively NYC’s circulatory（循環の） system, connecting New Yorkers across boroughs, facilitating cultural exchange, and allowing the city to grow and prosper.

『The Subway Is…』では、地下鉄がニューヨーク市を巡る交通システムとして機能し、ニューヨーク市民を区を越えて結ぶ役割を果たし、文化交流を促進し、ニューヨーク市の成長と繁栄に貢献していると分析しています。

👩”The Subway is....”というのは、ニューヨーク交通博物館が行なっている展示のテーマです。「地下鉄とは・・・」の空白を埋めるものを展示を見る人に考えてもらいたいという意図だと思います。

“Very few things exist that are as synonymous（同義の） with New York as our subway. Whether you hear a snippet（断片） of the sound of a train or catch a quick glimpse of a station or a subway car, you know you’re in New York City,” New York Transit Museum Director Concetta Bencivenga said.

「ニューヨークとこれほど密接に結びついたものは地下鉄の他にはまずありません。ちょっとでも車両の音を聞いたり、駅や車両を一瞬でも見たりすれば、自分はニューヨークにいるんだと実感するのですと、ニューヨーク交通博物館のディレクター、コンチェッタ・ベンシベンガ氏は述べました。

“Celebrating this incredible milestone anniversary offers an opportunity to explore the myriad（無数の） ways the subway has transformed our region over the past 120 years and encourages us to ponder（熟考する） what might be in store（起ころうとしている） for the next 120.”

「この素晴らしい記念日を祝うことは、過去120年間にわたり地下鉄が地域をどのように換えてきたかを様々な面から知り、これからの120年に何が待ち受けているかを考えるきっかけとなります。」

👩Lo-V Trainというのは、「Low-Voltage（低電圧）」車両のことです。従来の600Vの高電圧制御ではなく、より安全な低電圧システムを採用していました。最大速度は60mph（約97km/hだったそうです。

Coinciding with the new exhibit, the museum will host four special Nostalgia Rides on vintage Lo-V subway cars. On October 27 and November 16 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., these rides will offer passengers a chance to experience what it was like to ride the subway 120 years ago. The journey will trace portions of the city’s first subway line, which first opened on October 27, 1904.

展示が新しくなったのに合わせて、博物館ではヴィンテージのLo-V地下鉄車両を使って、特別に懐かしい体験乗車イベントを4回開催します。10月27日と11月16日の午前10時と午後2時、この地下鉄にご乗車の皆さまは120年前の地下鉄の乗車がどんなものであったかを体験できます。ルートは1904年10月27日に初めて開業した最初の地下鉄路線も走ります。

Leaving from the decommissioned（使われなくなった） Old South Ferry Station, the train will travel north along the 1/2/3 line to the Bronx before returning via the Lexington Avenue line. Passengers will get a glimpse of the famous Old City Hall Station before the ride concludes at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall Station.

今はなき、旧南フェリー駅を発車し、1/2/3号線沿いに北へ進みブロンクス方面へ走ります。その後、レキシントン・アベニュー線を経由して戻ります。乗客は、有名な旧市庁舎駅を望む景色を楽しんだ後、ブルックリン・ブリッジ・シティホール駅で乗車が終了します。
