Agloe, NY is the mysterious "paper town" that only exists on maps.

アグローは、地図上に存在しただけのミステリアスな「ペーパー・タウン」です。

Say hello to Agloe, New York, a city that didn’t exist, then it did, and…then it didn’t again.

ここがニューヨークのアグロー、存在しなかった町がその後現われ、そして、それからまた消えてしまった町です。

The small town (which would be around 2.5 hours from NYC) is what they call a “paper town” —a place that began as a fictional entry on a map but briefly became real.

その小さな町（ニューヨーク市から約2.5時間の場所）は「ペーパー・タウン」と呼ばれています。——地図上の架空の町として登場したのですが、一時本当に存在した町です。

Back in the 1920s, two men from the mapmaking company General Drafting Company, named Otto G. Lindberg and his assistant Ernest Alpers, created a fake city in Delaware County, New York.

1920年代、地図制作会社ジェネラル・ドラフティング・カンパニーのオットー・G・リンドバーグと彼の助手エルネスト・アルパーズは、ニューヨーク州デラウェア郡に架空の都市を作りました。

The city was an anagram（文字の順序を変えて作った別の単語） of their two names and they placed it at a remote（辺鄙な） intersection on their maps as a copyright（著作権） trap.

その街は二人の名前を（アルファベットを並べ替えて）アナグラムにしたもので、彼らはこの街を著作権侵害防止の仕掛けとして、地図の田舎の交差点に置いたのです。

In those days of physical maps, if “Agloe, New York” appeared on a competitor’s map…it was obvious that they were plagiarizing（盗用する） General Drafting Co.’s maps. These copyright traps became commonplace（普通の） during this time period when companies would try all sorts of tricks to throw off（混乱させる） other cartographers（地図製作者）.

当時の物理的な地図では、「ニューヨークのアグロ」が競合他社の地図に表示されれば、その会社がジェネラル・ドラフティング社の地図を盗用したことが明白でした。この著作権トラップは、企業が他の地図製作者を混乱させるため、あらゆる手口を試したこの時代によく見られた手法でした。

Fast forward a decade to the 1930s when the story takes a turn, and a company named Agloe Lodge Farms was officially registered as a business entity（実体） in the region, alongside a general store named Agloe General Store.

10年後の1930年代、物語は転機を迎えます。アグロー・ロッジ・ファームズという会社が地域で正式に事業体として登録され、同時にアグロー・ジェネラル・ストアという総合商店も開業しました。

According to the Times Herald-Record, members of the Nead family sold the land that would be Agloe, NY for $1, that they suspected was actually a front for rival mapmaker, Rand McNally.

タイムズ・ヘラルド・レコード誌によると、ニード家の家族がニューヨークのアグローを$1で売却したそうです。彼らはその土地はライバルの地図製作者であるランド・マクナリー社に対抗する見せかけであった疑いがあると述べています。

Nonetheless（それにもかかわらず）, whoever owned the store had seen Agloe on a map and decided to use the name, inadvertently（不注意にも） turning the fictional town into a real, if tiny, landmark.

Agloe continued to appear on maps for decades, even after the store closed and the area was abandoned in the 1990s.

It became a quirky（ユニークな） symbol of the blurred（曖昧な） line between fiction and reality, and was later popularized in John Green’s novel Paper Towns and its film adaptation.

これは、フィクションと現実の境界が曖昧であることのユニークな象徴となり、ジョン・グリーンの小説『ペーパー・タウンズ』とそれを映画化した作品として、広く知られるようになりました。

小説では、アグローという町は出てきますが、実際の歴史上のストーリーとはかなり違った内容となっています。

しかし、アグローは現在公式な地名ではなく、地図（Googleマップを含む）には表示されていません。それでも、そのユニークな地図の物語は、アメリカの民話の一つとして語り継がれています。

こういった詐欺まがいの話は、他にもあるかも？１ドルで買える土地があるなら、詐欺とは言えないでしょうけれどね。
