MisTyは、New Yorkに行くとまずMadison Square Parkに行きます。ここのベンチでNew Yorkの空気を体一杯吸い込んで、New Yorkの音と風景の中に入り込んでからNew Yorkで過ごす時間を始めます。

To keep our lawns primed for frequent recreational use during the spring and summer, we must let our lawns rest during cold weather dormancy. Lawns are scheduled to reopen in spring 2018.

春と夏に公園を訪れる方が多くなることに備えて芝生の状態を良くしておくために、寒い間は芝生を休ませてやらなければなりません。芝生は翌春に再びオープンする予定です。

という看板を見つけました。

「日本には四季があり、桜が咲くと春の訪れです」なんて外国の人に説明して、いかにも四季があるのが日本の特徴のように言ったことがありましたが、それは大きな間違いだと気づきました。他の国にも四季はある。日本の四季が、「四季」だと思っていたことが、日本を中心にした見方だと分りました。

さて、日本では桜の季節まっさかり。

ベンチはガラガラです。日本だと、ビニールシートを敷いて、宴会する人でいっぱいでしょうが・・・。

As we welcome summer, we’d like to acknowledge some of our favorite spring blooms. We hope you have enjoyed our standout collection of cherry blossoms (Prunus serrulata), as they have carpeted the lawns with their resplendent florets. Peak bloom for the Park’s cherry blossoms took place in March, but they could be seen draping the lawns through May, despite the temperature. These guys definitely deserve a standing ovation!

夏を迎えるにあたり、お気に入りの春の花に感謝したいと思います。マディソンスクェアの素晴らしい桜（学名Prunus serrulata)のコレクションを楽しんでいただいていることとおもいます。キラキラした小さな花のカーペットが芝生の上に敷かれているようです。マディソンスクェアの桜のピークは３月ですが、気温に関わらず５月まで芝生を覆っているのが見られます。拍手喝采してあげてくださいね！

We have also been fortunate spectators to our perennial collection of redbuds (Cersis canadensis), which we hope to see accredited by the American Public Gardens Association this year. Their pea-sized blossoms emerge in early spring before the leaves arrive, covering the bare branches in garlands of pink. With thirty-six varieties present in the Park, our team has been grateful to witness the increased ecological and aesthetic diversity that these redbuds have contributed.

また幸運なことに多くの種類のアメリカハナズオウ（学名Cersis canadensis)が咲くのも見られます。これは永年のコレクションで、今年「アメリカンパブリックガーデン協会」から正式認定を受けられるのではないかと期待しております。アメリカハナズオウは春の早い時期、葉が出る前に豆くらいの大きさの花が咲き、何もなかった枝をピンクの花冠で彩ります。公園内には36種類のアメリカハナズオウがあり、公園を守ってきた我々のチームは、これらがもたらす生態系の多様性や景観の多様性をこの公園で見られることに感謝しています。

Our purple plum trees (Prunus x cistena), like the cherry blossoms and redbuds, have gifted us continually with a dazzling display of pink and white blossoms. These trees blossom in early spring, but you can still enjoy their deep purple and maroon-hued leaves throughout summer.
We hope you have enjoyed the best of our spring blooms this season, but don’t roll up your picnic blankets just yet, as our summer displays are on their way!

紫のスモモ（学名Prnus x sistena)は桜やアメリカハナズオウのように、毎年ピンクと白の花を見事に咲かせて我々を喜ばせてくれます。こうした木は早春に咲きますが、夏の間は濃い紫や栗色の葉を楽しめます。
今シーズンの花の盛りをお楽しみいただいたと思いますが、ピクニックシートはまだしまわないでください。もうすぐ夏の花が咲きますから！

New Yorkerにとってはアメリカハナズオウが日本人にとっての桜のような存在なのかもしれません。（アメリカハナズオウは通常「レッドバッド---red buds」と呼ばれています。"bad"じゃなくて、"bud"ね。
