"Activist New York"の展示の中で、知らない名前がありました。日本では、学校のテキストに、キング牧師やマルコムXは出てきますが、ミルトン・ギャラミソン、エラ・ベーカー、ベイヤード・ラスティンって出てきましたっけ・・・？

Galamison, a Brooklyn pastor for four decades who was a major figure in the dispute over decentralizing the New York City schools in the 1960's, died of cancer Wednesday at his home in Brooklyn. He was 65 years old. Mr. Galamison, who wore a dashiki as he picketed construction sites to obtain more jobs for his fellow blacks and who led school boycotts to urge better education for minority-group children, served briefly as vice president of the New York City Board of Education.

ミルトン・A・ギャラミソン氏がブルックリンの自宅で水曜日、癌のため亡くなりました。彼は40年に渡ってブルックリンの牧師を勤め、1960年代のニューヨーク市の学校の分散化を巡る対立の主要人物でした。ギャラミソン氏は、（アフリカの民族衣装である）ダシキを着て黒人たちのためにもっと職を与えるよう建設現場でピケをはり、マイノリティーの子供たちによりよい教育を呼びかけて学校のボイコットを指導し、短期間ではありましたがニューヨーク市の教育委員会の副会長を務めました。

Born in 1903 in Norfolk, Virginia, Ella Baker became one of the leading figures of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and '60s. Following her early work for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, she was among the founders of Dr. Martin Luther King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957. Three years later, she helped launch the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. After decades of activism, Baker died in New York City in 1986.
エラ・ベイカーは、1903年、ヴァージニア州ノーフォク生まれ。1950年代、60年代の公民権運動の指導者の一人になりました。NAACP(全米黒人地位向上協会)設立に尽力した後、1957年、マルティン・ルーサー・キングの南部クリスチャン指導者協会の創立メンバーになりました。３年後、学生非暴力協議会の設立に貢献しました。活動家としての数十年を経て、1986年にニューヨークで死去しました。

Bayard Rustin was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on March 17, 1912. He moved to New York in the 1930s and was involved in pacifist groups and early civil rights protests. Combining non-violent resistance with organizational skills, he was a key adviser to Martin Luther King Jr. in the 1960s. Though he was arrested several times for his own civil disobedience and open homosexuality, he continued to fight for equality. He died in New York City on August 24, 1987.
1912年３月17日、ペンシルベニア州ウェストチェスターに生まれました。1930年代にニューヨークに引っ越し、平和運動にかかわり、初期の公民権運動に参加した。持ち前の組織力で非暴力運動を組織し、1960年代のマルティン・ルーサー・キングのキーアドバイザーであった。市に反抗したことで数回逮捕され、ホモセクシャルであることを公にし、平等を求めて戦い続けた。1987年８月24日にニューヨークで死去。
