タグボートには誰も乗っていなかった！「都市伝説」で楽しめるニューヨーク！

ニューヨークには、いわゆる「都市伝説」があります。それは、日本よりも巧妙で、人々はすっかり真実だと思い込んでしまっているかも分かりません。しかし詐欺ではなく、このことで被害を受けたという人もいません。ただ、ジョー・レジネッラやその協力者によって銘板付きの記念碑（追悼の碑）が公園などに設置されています。多くの人は立ち止まって、銘板の英文を読んでおり、信じた人もいるでしょう。

このような記念碑があちこちにあると、ジョー・レジネッラというアーティストを知ることになります。彼の作品だ！とわかる度に、宝探しで宝を探し当てたのと同じような喜びを感じ、次はどんな作品が出てくるのだろうとワクワクするのです。ニューヨークにしかない、全市民（あるいはここを訪れる観光客のための）ユーモアあるニューヨーク風の「おもてなし」と言えるかもしれません。

今日は、宇宙人に拉致されたかもしれない、タグボートの乗組員の話を読みます。

On July 13 1977 during the infamous New York City blackout the crew of the tugboat Maria 120 mysteriously vanished while investigating what appeared to be a private aircraft crash in New York harbor. This monument is dedicated in their memory by local 333 and the honorable mayor Edward I.Koch

1977年7月13日、大騒動となったニューヨーク市大停電の最中、ニューヨーク港で民間航空機の墜落と思われる事故を調査中のタグボート、マリア120号の乗組員が不可解にも姿を消した。この追悼の碑は、地元333支部と名誉あるエドワード・I・コッチ市長により、彼らに捧げられたものである。

This memorial statue at Battery Park stands in loving remembrance of the vanished crew of the Tugboat Maria 120, who vanished on the night of July 13, 1977, while investigating what appeared to be a private aircraft crash on New York Harbor. It is an ever-present symbol to the families of the missing that they are not forgotten as a reminder to us all that.........we are not alone....

このバッテリーパークの記念像は、1977年7月13日の夜、ニューヨーク港で発生した民間機墜落と思われる事故を調査中に消息を絶ったタグボート「マリア120」の乗組員たちへの深い哀悼の念もって建立されました。行方不明者のご家族にとって、彼らのことを決して忘れない、そして・・・（宇宙には）私たちの他に誰かがいるというという永遠の証です。

July 13, 1977…NYC was in the midst of a brutal heat wave, the city was facing severe financial crisis, and New Yorkers were feeling particularly on edge（緊張状態で） because of the recent “Son of Sam” murders.

1977年7月13日…ニューヨーク市は猛烈な熱波に見舞われ、深刻な財政危機に直面していました。さらに「サムの息子」連続殺人事件の余波で、市民の緊張は極限に達していました。

👩‍🏫"Son of Sam"(サムの息子）というのは、1976年から1977年にかけて、ニューヨークで若い女性やカップルら6人を殺害し、8人に重軽傷を負わせた事件です。

The tugboat “Maria 120” cruised around New York Harbor that evening, on calm waters, seemingly a world away from the buzz（ざわめき） of anxiety throughout the city streets, with her crew of six men.

その夜、タグボート「マリア120」は6人の乗組員を乗せてニューヨーク港を航行していました。穏やかな水面は、街中の不安のざわめきとはかけ離れた世界のようでした。

Their shift would go along uneventfully（平穏無事に） until approximately 9:30pm when all five boroughs of the city lost power(停電になる) and fell into complete darkness. Emergency transmissions（放送） came over the boat’s radio reporting of the widespread chaos, crime, and looting（略奪） that erupted.

彼らはいつものように平穏に勤務していたのですが、午後9時30分頃、市内の5区すべてで停電がおこり、街は完全な闇に包まれました。船のラジオには緊急放送が入り、広範囲にわたる混乱、犯罪、略奪が発生したと告げました。

As the single screw engine patrolled the waters between Liberty Island and Battery Park in pitch blackness（真っ暗闇）, something even more alarming happened. The crew witnessed a bright streak（すじ） of light through the night sky and what appeared to be a private aircraft crash into the harbor. They immediately radioed the Coast Guard a distress（遭難） signal and informed them that they were going to try to tow（曳航する） the crashed vessel to shore.

真っ暗闇の中、そのスクリューエンジン船がリバティ島とバッテリー公園の間をパトロールしていると、さらに不気味な出来事が起きました。乗組員は夜空を貫く明るい光の筋と、民間航空機が港に墜落したと思われるものを目撃したのです。彼らはすぐに沿岸警備隊に無線で遭難信号を送り、墜落した機体を岸まで引いていくと伝えました。

Shortly thereafter, two Coast Guard boats were on site to aid in the recovery, but what they discovered was far more disturbing than could be imagined…the aircraft that was reported to have crashed into the harbor? Not a trace of it…and the entire crew of the tugboat “Maria 120” was gone…vanished…the boat remained, but not a soul（人っこ一人いない） onboard…Many believe that the “private aircraft” was actually a UFO…

間もなく、2隻の沿岸警備隊艇が救助活動のため現場に到着したのですが、そこで発見されたものは想像をはるかに超える不可解なものでした…港に墜落したと報告された航空機の跡すらなかったのです…そしてタグボート「マリア120」の乗組員全員が消えていました…跡形もなく…船体は残っていたのですが、乗員は一人もいなかったのです…多くの人たちが、あの「民間機」は実はUFOだったと信じています…

In 1982, a monument was erected by Local 333 and the honorable Mayor Edward I. Koch in honor of the mysteriously missing crew of the tugboat “Maria 120” in Battery Park overlooking the waters of the last know whereabouts of these six men.

1982年、バッテリー公園に、謎の失踪を遂げたタグボート「マリア120号」の乗組員6名を追悼する記念碑が、第333支部とエドワード・I・コッチ名誉市長によって建てられました。この公園からは、この６人の乗組員の最後の行方を知っている水域を見渡すことができます。

この記念碑を作製した、ジオネッラは、次のように語っています。（一部省略）

So then I decided to do a series. I did the one with the elephants, and that one went really well. And then I did another one. In the 1970s in July, there was a blackout. The city went into turmoil（混乱）. And on that night, a tugboat had claimed to see what it thought was a private aircraft crash into the harbor.

それでモニュメントシリーズを作ることに決めたんだ。（３匹の）象のモニュメントを作ったらすごく好評だったよ。それからまた別の作品を作ったんだ。1970年代の7月、停電が起きて街は混乱に陥ったね。その夜、あるタグボートが民間機と思われるものが港に墜落するのを目撃したと言ったんだ。

And they went to investigate, and they called the Coast Guard, and when the Coast Guard showed up, the tugboat was gone. And then it’s this myth that the UFO took them. So I made this statue of a longshoreman（港湾労働者）, and it’s next to an alien body. That one, I was actually getting mad, because people thought it was real. I was like, you’ve got to be kidding me.

目撃者は何が起こったのか見に行って、沿岸警備隊に通報したが、警備隊が到着した時には曳船は消えていた。そこで「UFOが曳船を連れ去った」という伝説が生まれた。そこで私は港湾労働者の像を作り、その横に宇宙人の遺体を置いた。この作品には本当に慌てたよ。人々が本当だと思い込んだからね。「冗談だろ」と思ったよ。

日本にも宇宙人に関する逸話は数多くありますね。無数の星を眺めていると、どこかに地球と同じような星があって宇宙人が地球に訪れても不思議じゃないなと思えてきます。
