MisTy

What Would You Pick as Word of the Year?

Every year the Oxford English Dictionary selects a “word of the year” that is meant “to reflect the ethos(精神), mood or preoccupations(最大の関心事)” of the previous year. For 2025, the publisher chose “rage(怒り) bait(心を煽るもの).” What do you think of this choice? What is one word or phrase that you think sums up(要約する) this year?

What Was the Best Day of Your Year?

When you look back on this year, what would you say was your most memorable(記憶に残る) day? Were you celebrating a big life event or achievement, like getting your license? Or were you doing something more mundane(普段通りの) — perhaps talking to a friend on the phone, making a meal for your family or taking a long walk alone? What made that day so special for you?

What’s Special About Winter and the Holidays in the Place Where You Live?

What do you appreciate about winter in general? How will you spend your time off from school this season?

If you will be staying close to home, we have a special challenge for you: We’d like to know what’s special about the place where you live, and we invite you to make a photo essay that explores that question.

Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions? How About In-and-Out or Gratitude Lists?

As one year ends and another begins, will you take stock of (現状を把握する)all that you have (or haven’t) accomplished and make resolutions(決意) for the year ahead? Or, like other Gen Zers (Z世代の人々), do you set goals all year round?

😊Gratitude Listとは

Gratitude List

The Learning Network

The Learning Network publishes hundreds of teaching resources each school year. These resources all use content from The New York Times — articles, essays, images, videos, graphics and podcasts — as teaching tools for subjects across the curriculum.

Our intended audience is middle and high school teachers and students (age 13 and up). That said, we know that our content is also used in elementary schools and universities, and much of it is appropriate up and down levels.

All of our resources are free — and everything we link to in The Times is free as well, as long as you access it from our site. You do not need a Times subscription to use The Learning Network.
