MisTy

New York City is preparing for one of the most dangerous heat events in recent years. Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani has activated an unprecedented Heat Emergency Plan because temperatures are expected to reach historic levels. Beginning Wednesday, daytime temperatures will rise into the upper 90s and may reach 100°F, while the heat index could climb as high as 108–109°F. These extreme conditions are expected to continue through the July 4 holiday weekend. If the forecast is correct, Thursday could become the first 100-degree day in Central Park since 2012.

City officials emphasize that extreme heat is a serious threat. Many heat-related deaths (熱波が関係している死亡)in New York occur indoors when people do not have air conditioning. Because heat can be a “silent killer,” the City is taking wide-ranging actions to protect residents, especially vulnerable groups(脆弱な立場にある人々) such as older adults, people experiencing homelessness, and outdoor workers.

A major part of the plan is the activation of hundreds of cooling centers across all five boroughs. These centers will open in public buildings such as libraries, schools, hospitals, older adult centers, and even large facilities like the Javits Center. Some centers will stay open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. during the peak heat days. New Yorkers can find nearby cooling centers through the City’s Cool Options Map, by calling 311, or by checking one of the 2,200 LinkNYC kiosks, which will display real-time walking directions to the nearest cooling center.

The City is also launching new initiatives. One of the most important is the introduction of COOL vans, operated by NYC Health + Hospitals. These mobile units will travel around the city to provide water, electrolytes(電解質), sunscreen, medical care, and wellness checks (健康状態の確認). They can also transport people to cooling centers or healthcare facilities. Some COOL vans will visit older adults in their homes to ensure they are safe. In addition, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will operate Health Action Centers and Overdose Prevention Centers as cooling centers and expand pop-up (仮設の)cooling stations that offer misting fans, cold water, and cooling towels for outdoor workers such as street vendors and delivery workers.

Other agencies are also taking action. The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection will send heat safety information to about 46,000 businesses, reminding them to create heat illness plans (熱中症対策計画)and to inform workers about symptoms of heat exhaustion(熱疲労). The Department of Homeless Services will activate Code Red outreach, sending teams to distribute water and supplies to people experiencing homelessness.

City leaders urge all New Yorkers to take the heat seriously. Residents should stay indoors with air conditioning whenever possible, drink plenty of water, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, and check on neighbors—especially older adults (高齢者)and people with disabilities. Warning signs of heat illness include confusion(意識混濁), nausea (吐き気), dizziness(めまい),  trouble breathing, and hot, dry skin. Anyone showing these symptoms should receive immediate medical attention.

To stay informed, New Yorkers are encouraged to sign up for Notify NYC. The City stresses that everyone must work together to stay safe during this historic heat wave.
