ニューヨーク市がコロナ感染対策でレストランの屋外営業を許可して以来、予想できなかったネズミの数の増大が深刻な問題となっています。屋外設備の床下が住処になったり、屋外飲食でゴミとなった残飯がエサになったりしているようです。市もゴミ収集の時間を変えたりしながら対策を練っていますがなかなか効果が得られず、ついにネズミハンターを公募し、驚くべき年俸を提示しました。

Talk about an odd job: the Mayor's Office is currently looking for a "rat czar" to, according to an official job posting, "fight the real enemy—New York City's relentless rat population."

一風変わった仕事の話ですが、市長室は現在、公式の求人情報で、「ネズミ退治の専門家」を探しています。そこには、「本当の敵ーニューヨーク市の容赦ないネズミの集団と戦うため」と描かれています。

Technically called a Director of Rodent Mitigation, the new employee will be paid an annual salary of between $120,000 and $170,000 and will be expected to keep “the city’s rats in check and on notice.” The position is apparently a “24/7 job requiring stamina and stagecraft.” You can apply for the position right here.

専門的にはネズミ対策部長と呼ばれるこの新しい職員には、12万ドルから17万ドルの年俸が支払われ、「市のネズミを抑制し、警告を出す」ことが期待されています。このポジションは、どうやら「スタミナと演出技法が必要な年中無休の仕事 」のようです。このポジションへの応募はこちらからどうぞ。

As for job requirements, the would-be czar should:

必要条件としては次のような事が求められます。
「専門家」になるためには・・・

● have a background in urban planning, project management or government and be able to work across agencies;

都市計画、プロジェクトマネジメント、行政のいずれかの経歴を持ち、省庁を越えて仕事ができる方。

● be “highly motivated and somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including

高いモチベーションと、残忍なところがあり、あらゆる解決策を様々な角度から検討する決意を持っている人であること。例えば・・・

improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management, and wholesale slaughter;

業務効率化、データ収集、技術革新、ゴミ管理、倉庫販売害獣駆除などの改善ができる方。

● have a “swashbuckling attitude, crafty humor, and general aura of badassery” (we’re not kidding);

向こう見ずな態度、÷知恵のユーモア、そしてつわもののオーラというべきものを持っている方（冗談ではありませんよ）

● display a “virulent vehemence for vermin.”

「害獣に対する猛烈な敵意  」が表れている方。

That last point should not be a problem, considering the fact that New Yorkers have been contending with more right sightings than ever before and readily (and rightfully) complaining about all the damage caused by the rodents all around town.

ニューヨーカーがかつてないほど目撃に悩まされ、街中のネズミによる被害についてすぐに（そして当然ながら）文句を言ってくることを考えると、最後の点は問題ではないでしょう。

Even mayor Eric Adams has had enough of the little animals. "There's NOTHING I hate more than rats," the politician wrote on Twitter yesterday, sharing the city's latest job posting. "If you have the drive, determination and killer instinct needed to fight New York City's relentless rat population—then your dream job awaits."

"run"には、自動詞では、文字通り「走る」の意味になりますが、他動詞では、

to organize or be in charge of an activity, business, organization, or country
活動、ビジネス、組織、または国を組織する、または任されている

という意味があります。（定義はロングマンより）

しかし、寄付の意味も込めてにしても６千円以上するのはちょっとね。。。
日本でこれ着ていても多分ほとんどの人は何のことか分からないでしょうね。。。反対にこれ着ていて、話しかけてくれる人とは話がはずむかも！
