昨日の続きで、ニューヨークタイムズの『スクラッチ』を読んでいます。今回は、知りたい情報を取り出すというより、ネイティブのプロのライターが書いたエッセイをじっくり「精読」しています。

New Jersey has long embraced （受け入れる）its reputation （名声）as the country’s diner capital. Peter Sedereas, who owns a diner in New Jersey and runs an unofficial diner coalition（連合）, said that the number of diners in the state has fallen in recent years. “We don’t officially keep track; it’s more word of mouth（口伝え）. At its peak we had 575 diners, and we have about 400 now.”

The Diakakises（ディアカキス一家） have hustled（頑張った） to adapt（順応する）: updating their menu with vegetarian options and opening their doors to movie shoots for extra income（臨時収入）. “This summer I’m going to try DoorDash and Uber Eats. I’ve got to make sure I stay above the deck,” Mr. Diakakis said. “Things change. You’ve got to evolve.”

👩"I stay above the deck"は、「船のデッキの上に居続ける」つまり、船の行先を常に正しいかどうかを見届けていく、という意味の表現になっています。

While Bendix continues to adapt, its enduring （永続的な）appeal is the nostalgia it fosters（はぐぐむ）.

But the customers here also like to talk about what’s current（最近の話題）, in a country that feels embattled（論争のさなかにある）. The regulars come from all walks of life （あらゆる職業、階層）and across party lines. “The Fox News and the CNN parrots will argue amongst themselves at the counter. I try to stay nonpolitical,” Mr. Diakakis said.

ベンディックスというダイナーは（世の流れに）適応し続ける一方で、昔の懐かしさを大切に守ってきたというところも、長く続いて来た魅力である。

しかし、この店の客は、(民主党と共和党で）論争になっているこの国で、最近の話題を語るのも好きだ。常連客はあらゆる階層から、党派を超えて集まってくる。「フォックス・ニュースやCNNが言っていることをそのまま繰り返すような論争がカウンターで行われます。私はどちらにも味方しないようにしています」とディアカキス氏は言う。

👩フォックスニュースは、共和党（トランプ）寄り、CNNは、民主党（バイデン）寄りのことを言っています。今年は大統領選挙もあり、トランプ前大統領については、34件の告訴内容ですべて有罪の判決が出たばかりです。

“I have two full-time jobs. In this economy you have to --- to live the lifestyle I want. I like to eat out and get nice cars. I come here every single day. It’s affordable. If you go anywhere else and I have an omelet, it will cost you over 20 dollars.”

教授で航空機エンジニアのカレド・モハメドさん（49歳）のような顧客は、経済的なプレッシャーを感じている。

“And I stayed. It’s like ‘cheers’. You wanna go where they know your name.

“The younger generation --- most of them take Uber. Did Uber hurt my business? Yes. But it’s a different type of service. Just like when you step in here and feel the love, it’s like that with my car service.”

ウォルター・マーティンさん（59歳）はリムジン・サービスを経営している。あだ名はリムジン・ウォルトだ。彼がこの店に最初に来たのは、13年前のことだ。

「僕の居場所はここだよ。ここの応援団みたいなもんさ。自分の名前を知ってくれているところがいいよ。若い世代はウーバーイーツを使ってるんだろ。ウーバーのシステムが僕の（リムジン・サービスという）商売に打撃を与えたかって？そうだね。でも、サービスのタイプが違うからね。ここに一歩足を踏み入れると愛を感じるように、自分のリムジン・サービスもそうだと思ってる。」

👩ウォルターさんの最後の"Just like when you step in here and feel the love, it’s like that with my car service.”という一文に、スマホの便利さを越えるサービスは今後も残るだろうと確信しました。
