エンパイアステートビルに行く前に知っておきたいトリビア！

ニューヨークのガイドブックには必ず載っている、エンパイアステートビル。
Untapped New Yorkは2021年５月に次のような特集を載せていました。ライターは、

日本人にもよく知られているエンパイアステートビルの興味深い10の秘密について書かれているのですが、そのうち６つを取り上げ、一部のみを精読します。

1. There’s a Decommissioned （廃止された）103rd Floor Observation Deck
103階に廃止された展望台がある

The 86th floor and 102nd floor observation decks of the Empire State Building are accessible but there’s a 103rd floor observation deck that’s still closed off. There’s a “celebrity balcony” on this 103rd floor that forms a ring around the mooring mast （係留柱）, on top of which the spire （尖塔）begins.

エンパイアステートビルの86階と102階の展望台に行くことはできますが、103階の展望台は未だに閉鎖されています。このフロアには「セレブリティ・バルコニー」があり、それは飛行船が停泊できるようにするマストの周りにリング状になっています。そこから先が尖塔部分です。

2. The Empire State Building was one of the Fastest Skyscrapers Built

Built atop the original Waldorf-Astoria hotel, the Empire State Building opened on March 31, 1931 and took only one year and 45 days to build, rising at 4 1/2 floors per week.

元のウォルドルフ＝アストリア・ホテルの跡地に建てられたエンパイアステートビルは、1週間に4.5フロアのペースで建設が進み、わずか１年と45日で、1931年3月31日にオープンしました。

In 1931, tickets to the observatories cost $1 ($17.43 in today’s dollars), the most expensive observation deck in the city at the time.

1931年、展望台の入場料は1ドル（現在の貨幣価値で17.43ドル）でした。当時、これはニューヨークで最も入場料の高い展望台でした。

In the new museum inside the Empire State Building, you can see the original blueprints and sketches of the building, intended from the beginning to be the world’s tallest building.

Inside the museum, you can also experience interactive historical exhibitions about the building’s engineering feats（妙技）, as well as see some great archival objects including the original survey marker （測量標）that was used.

博物館内では、このビルの建築技術に関するインタラクティブな歴史展示を体験できるほか、使用されたオリジナルの測量標など、貴重なアーカイブ資料も見ることができます。

3. The Docking of Blimps（小型飛行船） — Did It Happen?
飛行船のドッキング---本当に実現したのか？

It’s a common misconception （思い違い）that there was a docking station at the top of the Empire State Building for blimps （小型飛行船）and zeppelins.

エンパイアステートビルの最上部に小型飛行船やツェッペリン飛行船のためのドッキングステーションがあったという話はよく聞きますが、そういうことはありません。

In 2010, the New York Times also reported that the although the plan for a docking station was real, the docking of an airship, including these famous photographs of the docking didn’t fully occur and that the famous photo above is a “composite（合成写真）, a fake.” But a Navy airship hovered around the tower amidst treacherous（危険な） winds at the request of a newsreel（ニュース映画） company.

2010年には、ニューヨーク・タイムズ紙も、ドッキングステーションの計画は現実のものだったものの、飛行船のドッキングは、これらの有名なドッキングの写真を含め、完全に実現したわけではなく、上記の有名な写真は「合成写真、偽物」であると報じました。しかし、ニュース映画会社の依頼により、海軍の飛行船が危険な風の中、タワーの周辺をホバリングしました。
