「紅葉狩り」は英語になった!？"kaiseki dinner"とは？

9月も中旬を過ぎると、まだ暑い日があるとはいえ、秋の気配をあちこちで感じることができます。

ニューヨークの秋、特に紅葉について様々なスポットを取り上げましたが、日本で感じられる紅葉の美しさは、他の国の人にはどのように感じられるのでしょう？ニューヨークタイムズの記者が３日間に渡る、「モミジガリ」の体験を通して見た日本について報告していました。その記事を読んでみたいと思います。

3 Days of ‘Momijigari’: Experiencing Japan’s Fiery （火が燃えるように赤い）Autumnal Foliage

3日間の「紅葉狩り」を通して日本の燃える秋を体験する

“Momijigari” means hunting autumn leaves and people consult forecasts and follow predictions to find the most beautiful displays. This itinerary（旅行プラン）adds history and a sense of spirituality to the colors.

「紅葉狩り」とは紅葉を求めて出かけることで、人々は予報を調べ、予測に従って最も美しい紅葉の景色を見つけます。紅葉狩りに出かけて色彩を楽しむだけでなく、歴史と精神性を感じているのです。

The Japanese have a single word to describe going into nature to look for the changing leaves before the dark snap（寒波） of winter: momijigari.

日本語には、冬の暗い寒さが訪れる前に、自然の中へ紅葉を探しに行くことを表す一つの言葉があります。「もみじ狩り」です。

“Momiji” translates to red maple but extends to any bright autumn leaves. “Gari” means hunting, metaphorically（比喩的に）. But if you’re consulting forecasts and local predictions to pin down the peak days in autumn to go, it does resemble hunting.

「モミジ」は赤く色づくカエデを意味しますが、鮮やかな秋の紅葉全般を指します。「狩り」は比喩的に狩猟を意味します。しかし、そのピーク時期を狙って予報や地域の予測を調べるなら、それはまさに「狩り」のニュアンスです。

There are more than 1,000 varieties of Japanese maple alone, producing fiery reds, oranges, browns and purples. Many of their leaves are more petite（小さい） than U.S. varieties, the size of a baby’s hands. The maples have red-tinged （～の色合いを帯びた）tips or are zinging　（元気に飛び回るような） yellow and look like they’ve been dabbed （軽く塗る）in orange paint.

日本のカエデだけでも1,000品種以上あり、それらの葉は、秋になると燃えるような赤、オレンジ、茶色や紫になります。その葉の多くはアメリカの品種より小さく、赤ちゃんの手ほどの大きさです。カエデの葉は先端が赤みを帯びたり、輝くような黄色になったり、オレンジの絵の具をちょっと加えたようになります。

Many tourists head to Kyoto to see its brilliant autumnal displays. But an alternative to taking the standard three-hour Tokaido Shinkansen, or bullet train, from Tokyo to Kyoto is to take a three-day scenic detour through the mountains, where you can escape the pace of the cities and see the well-preserved history and spiritual undercurrents of Japan.

多くの観光客が鮮やかな紅葉を見ようと京都を訪れます。しかし東京から京都まで東海道新幹線（3時間）で行かなくても、3日間かけて近くの街を巡り、風光明媚な散策路を歩くのもひとつの選択肢です。そこでは都会の喧騒から離れ、長く伝えられている日本の歴史と精神的な底流を感じることができます。

Along the way, you can hike among the autumn leaves and waterfalls, discover local specialties such as Nagano soba noodles, visit 300-year-old sake breweries and have a chance to cross paths with（出遭う） wild Japanese macaques（マカク科のサル）, or snow monkeys, as they are often called. The centerpiece is an unmissable stay in a traditional hot spring inn, or onsen ryokan, which includes a customarily（通例） 

multicourse（数品の）kaiseki dinner, an almost equally elaborate breakfast and the  loan（貸出）of Japanese lounge（くつろぐ） clothing.

道中では、紅葉や滝の中をハイキングしたり、長野そばなどの地元の名物を発見したり、300年の歴史を持つ酒蔵を訪れたり、野生のニホンザル（しばしば「雪猿」と呼ばれる）に出会う機会もあります。この旅のハイライトは、欠かすことのできない伝統的な温泉旅館での宿泊です。この宿泊には、通例次々に運ばれる会席料理の夕食と、それと同じくらい手の込んでいる朝食、そして日本のくつろぎ着の貸し出しが含まれています。

👩‍🏫英語で、"kaiseki dinner"と"dinner"が付いている場合の"kaiseki"は、「懐石」ではなく、「会席」です。英語表記ではどちらも"kaiseki"になるので混乱しますね。

"multicourse kaiseki dinner"の構成の一例です。名称は異なる場合がありますが、ご参考までに。

1. 先付（さきづけ）

Appetizer to stimulate the palate (前菜。和え物や酢の物など、食欲をそそる小品。)

2. 椀盛り（わんもり）

A dish featuring seasonal ingredients (季節の素材を使った出汁の効いた一品。）

3. 造り（つくり）

Expertly sliced raw fish　（刺身。鮮度と包丁技術が光る盛り合わせ。）

4. 焼物（やきもの）

Grilled dish　（焼き魚や和牛など、メインディッシュ的な存在。）

5. 強肴（しいざかな）

Simmered / fried dish　（煮物・揚げ物など、味の変化を楽しむ料理。）

6. 吸い物

Japanese soup （口の中をリセットする役割。）

7. 八寸（はっすん）

Seasonal platter　（珍味の盛り合わせ。酒との相性を意識した構成。）

8. ご飯・留椀・香の物

Rice, miso soup, and pickles（白米、味噌汁、漬物など、食事の締め。）

9. 水菓子

Dessert (果物や和菓子などのデザート。)

👩‍🏫こうした料理はまさに日本の食文化ですね。

文の中にある、...you can escape the pace of the cities and see the well-preserved history and spiritual undercurrents of Japan.(長く伝えられている日本の歴史と精神的な底流に触れることができる）が、まさに、今まで読んできたニューヨークの紅葉狩りとは違う、日本の紅葉狩りの特徴ではないかと思いました。

明日からその３日間を追いたいと思いいます。
