ブロードウェイが15～17%落ち込むと、その経済的影響は街全体に及ぶといいます。コロナ渦以後、ニューヨークの回復は目を見張るものがありましたが、ブロードウェイの回復はおくれているようです。海外からの観光客は戻ったけれど、地域周辺の人たちがまだ以前のように劇場に行かなくなったということが問題のひとつだと分かりました。

今日はその原因を探るアンケート結果から始めます。13:20ごろからです。

Accelerating the Return of Regional Visitors to Broadway

① 3000人の観客のアンケートから分かったことは？

 I think what was most telling to me was that there wasn't a one specific thing and I think people are looking for one specific answer to say why is it down...... I think it was a 20% problem. Everything is off by about 20% in different ways. The surveying was done over a year ago and so much has changed. I look at like Broadway for example, we turned the switch off on every live experience in this city in 2020. We shut it off everyone created new habits had new lives moved changed and then we turned the switch back on. It takes time for things to get back to where they were. .....When we asked people about a year ago why they weren't coming in it was work from home was one element.

最も印象的だったのは、特定の要因がひとつだけということではなかったということです。人々は、なぜ落ち込んでいるのか、その明確な一つの答えを求めているのだと思います。20%問題です。あらゆるものが、さまざまな形で20%ほど落ちているのです。調査は1年以上前に実施されたものですが、（日常生活に）多くの変化がありました。  例えばブロードウェイを見てみると、2020年には（コロナの拡大のため）この街のあらゆる劇場での上演が中止になりました。誰もが新しい習慣を作り、新しい生活を送り、移動し、変化し、そして私たちは再びスイッチを入れて上演を始めました。元の状態に戻るには時間がかかります。...1年ほど前に人々に「なぜ来ないのか」と尋ねたところ、在宅勤務が一つの要因でした。

② コロナで人々の生活習慣が変わった以外で、ブロードウェイに影響を与えたものはは何か？（14:30ごろから）

I'm just not in the city enough. Tickets are too expensive. Everything is too expensive, which is the answer on every survey question.  .....It was a changing habits. The the transit systems have come up. I take New Jersey Transit. I'm a suburbanite. It is an absolute terrible experience. No one would disagree with me. There's no end in sight, so there's a lot of different headwinds.

(ニュージャージー郊外に住んでいる）私はニューヨーク市にあまり出かけません。切符は高すぎるし、すべての物価が高すぎます。これは、これまでのあらゆるアンケート調査の質問に対する答えです。生活習慣が変化していました。交通システムが改正されて戻りました。私はニュージャージー・トランジット鉄道を利用しています。郊外に住んでいるので。交通はそれはひどいのです。私に反対する人はいないでしょう。終わりが見えないので、多くの逆風があります。

 I just look at the data and I understand that we've seen a significant decrease in the seven major crime categories over the past couple of years in the district. At the same time the data shows that felony assaults were up over 10%. That's worsening was up over 25%  over the past two years.

 私はデータを見ているだけで、この地区では過去数年間で7つの主要犯罪カテゴリーで大幅な減少が見られたことが分かります。同時に、データによると重罪の暴行事件は10%以上増加しました。これは、ここ2年間で、25%以上増加悪化したことを示しています。

③ 精神疾患をかかえている人に対して、どのような感想をもっているか？

 ....so it's not like we can safely say that each of these major categories are trending in the right direction in this district. There are some some real challenges. At least the data suggests that are out there. .....it doesn't help when you see increases in the number of folks that are dealing with severe mental illness with seemingly untreated.  When you see the the folks with substance-use-disorders in public really struggling without seemingly anywhere to go.

この地区では、これらの（問題となる）主要分野のそれぞれが是正の方向に向かって推移していると断言できるわけではありません。いくつかの深刻な課題があります。少なくとも、データはそれを示唆しています。深刻な精神疾患を抱えながら、治療を受けずにいる人々の数が増加している現状は、何の解決にもなりません。街中で薬物使用障害を抱える人々が、どこにも行くあてもなく、本当に苦しんでいる姿を目の当たりにすると、どうすることもできません。
