Human Artists Take on Their New Robot Competition

The illustrations in this column were made by hand using paint and ink. Many hours of work went into them. And in the humble opinion of the people doing that work, it slows.
Illustrators have been feeling a little defensive lately, though: Artificial intelligence is encouroaching on their turf.

このコラムのイラストは、絵の具とインクを使って手作業で行なっています。作業の多くの時間はそれにとられます。そして、その作業に関わっている者から言わせていただくと、その工程は「遅い」です。

With a free online program like DALL-E, anyone can make illustrations within seconds. Some argue that A.I. technology is just another tool, but many commercial artists are worried about the impact it will have on the future of illustration. (The robots could not be reached for comment.)

“Art is my only way to get whatever is in my mind out. It makes me really angry and frustrated that illustrators and freelance artists who’ve had to find a way to sustain themselves now have to be worried about being replaced by a bunch of keywords.”

The more this database is available to companies, the more they will use it to make images for way cheaper, and they may see no point in employing people to make those images or paying them a fair wage.”

“I’m pretty confident that A.I. won’t produce very good art, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t strip artists of their livelihood.”

“The way A.I. functions is that it takes prompts that are usually really complex ideas and reduces them to a set of essentializing characteristics. The fully illustrated Cosmopolitan cover with a female astronaut on the moon' --- the prompt was something like 'female astronaut with athletic build walking on the moon.' And they advertised it like, ‘This only took 15 seconds to generate.’”

“It didn’t take 15 seconds to generate. It required a lot of refinement on the human end --- in looking through all of the generated images, refining the image that was generated, making it print – ready.”

“We are often under the mistaken idea that technology just invents itself and it’s going to develop whether we have a say in it or not.”
