「リズ」と聞けば、何かの略語のような印象があります。特に日本人にとっては、"L"と"R"の発音がどちらも「ラ行」に聞こえる場合があるので、「リズ」と書いてあれば、Elisabeth(エリザベス）の愛称かと思った方もいらっしゃると思います。

今日は、昨日のコメントの続きで、特に、"rizz"をどのように使っているか、また、年配の人たちにとってこうした「新語」についてどう思っているのかといった内容を抜粋してみました。

It's a useful word: like "charisma," but without the gravitas and with a stronger sexual implication. Hitler had charisma, but he definitely lacked rizz. English is a demotic language. There's no governing body that determines what is legit and what is bogus. We, the people, determine that by usage. What's so funny about the purists is that the words they think represent proper English were themselves slang used by the lower classes or neologisms.

New words are delightful, or at least interesting in what they reflect about society. People grousing should be aware that humans have been saying some form of "Kids these days are destroying the language" ever since the records of written language. But, as they told us in linguistics, no language has ever fallen apart by being used so much. Languages only die out from lack of use. English is doing just fine.

新しい言葉というのは楽しい。少なくとも面白い。社会を反映しているって言う意味でね。
批判してる人たちは、人間は、言語が書き残されるようになって以来ずっと、「最近の若い奴らが言語をダメにしている」と言い続けているってことに気付くべきだね。でも、言語学で言われているように、使われすぎて滅びた言語はないでしょ。使われなくなって滅びるんだよね。英語は大丈夫だと思う。

I'm of the age where saying "rizz" is very common (19 years old). I remember how astounded I was when I first heard it around April 2022. It's interesting how quickly new words can blend into slang.

I think rizz is a great word. Among younger people it’s a mainstay of conversation and can be a noun, verb or adjective. Last night I overheard my son saying how Holden Caulfield was trying to rizz an older woman. ( don’t think he’ll put that in a school essay though)

At my age I would sound silly using a word like ‘rizz’. Charisma is a perfectly good word that has always done the job for me. Nobody over the age of 30 should say ‘rizz’. I like words that are coined to express new concepts that have no word.

I'm sure the staying power of this term will be extremely limited. Probably so limited that it will be gone before many people even learned of its existence. It seems much of the so called "new" words in use are just abbreviations for existing words. It seems dubious to consider "rizz" a new word considering it is such an abbreviation.

But considering that "charisma" as a word was a fairly seldom used up until this recent use, obviously an abbreviation would not get much use either outside of generational slang. How frequently does a normal person have the need of the word charisma, its certainly not used in daily conversation, especially as its true meaning and connotations seems somewhat lost on the "rizz" crowd. 

しかし、（「リズ」が）最近使われるようになるまで、「カリスマ」という言葉が、ほとんど使われていなかったことを考えると、明らかに、世代的なスラング以外では、略語もあまり使われないでしょう。 普通の人がカリスマという言葉を必要とすることがどれだけあるでしょう？実際日常会話では使われていませんね。特に「リズ」を使っている人たちの中では、「カリスマ」という語の本当の意味やそれが含んでいる内容を分かって使っているのではないようです。

As with most fads or trends this one is probably going to become over used and if it gained wider acceptance the fad/trend aspect will become dated and its original users will drop it from use as it will no longer be trendy.

ほとんどの流行やトレンドがそうであるように、この言葉もおそらく使われ過ぎになり、より広く受け入れられるようになれば、流行やトレンドの側面は時代遅れになり、本来の使用者はもはやトレンディではなくなるため、使用しなくなるでしょう。

The dictionary does itself and the English language a disservice by accepting such slang or fad words, especially in the case of "rizz" as it seems the usage is much looser then "charisma", in effect it's replacing a highly specific term for a quality which is otherwise hard to define, with a nebulous abbreviation which seems to mean whatever the user wants in the moment. Its essentially the dumbing down of the English language.

全体的に"rizz"の使える状況は掴めるかなと思いますが。。。
