ニューヨーク市は、大晦日のボールドロップのカウントダウンが終わって年が明けると、力尽きたように静かになります。元旦は、ボールドロップのときに使われた紙吹雪の掃除が大変です。

今日ご紹介するのは、元旦に最も忙しい、ニューヨーク市衛生局の仕事ぶりです。

New York's Strongest Make Quick Work of Times Square Cleanup as 200 Sanitation Workers Remove 100,000 Pounds of Confetti (紙吹雪) and Debris in Mere Hours

ニューヨーク最強のクルーはタイムズ・スクエアの清掃をあっという間に片付ける。200人の清掃作業員がわずか数時間で10万ポンドの紙ふぶきやがらくたを撤去するのだ。

After New Year’s revelers （お祭り騒ぎをする人たち）made their dreams come true by seeing the ball drop at the Crossroads of the World, the New York City Department of Sanitation was able to fulfill our goal, too – cleaning up the confetti and giving residents and visitors a clean and open Times Square by daybreak!

新年の騒ぎを楽しんだ人々が「世界の交差点」でボールが落ちるのを見て夢を叶えた後、衛生局も、自分たちの目標を達成することができました。それは、紙吹雪を片付け、住民や観光客に夜明けまでに清潔で開放的なタイムズ・スクエアを提供するということです！

Thanks to New York’s Strongest, by the time the sun rose this morning, one would have no idea that one million revelers had been in Times Square mere hours before. Some 187 Sanitation Workers using 21 mechanical brooms and 20 collection trucks – along with brooms and backpack blowers – picked up about 100,000 pounds of litter, confetti and party hats beginning the moment the clock struck midnight, as shown in the attached photos.

ニューヨーク最強クルーのおかげで、今朝太陽が昇る頃には、ほんの数時間前に100万人もの人々がタイムズ・スクエアにいたなどとは誰も想像できない状態になっているでしょう。21台の機械式ほうきと20台の収集トラック（ほうきやバックパック式ブロワーも使用）を使用した187人の清掃作業員が、添付の写真にあるように、午前0時を告げる鐘が鳴った瞬間から、約10万ポンドのごみ、紙ふぶき、パーティー用帽子などを拾い集めました。

“Every year, this holiday gives people an opportunity to begin anew（新たに） and start with a clean slate（再出発する）. To that end（その目標に向かって）,  DSNY is proud to deliver a clean street, right here in Times Square,” said Commissioner Tisch. “This winter, we have the highest headcount（人数） in decades, and I want to thank Mayor Adams for giving us the tools we need to get the job done. Here's to（～に乾杯） a great – and clean – 2024.”

「毎年、元旦は人々がまっさらの状態で新たなスタートを切ることができる日になります。そのために、私たちニューヨーク衛生局はここタイムズ・スクエアで清潔な通りを提供できることを誇りに思います」、「この冬はここ数十年で最も多くの人員を配置していますが、仕事を遂行するために必要なツールを提供してくれたアダムズ市長に感謝したいと思います。素晴らしい、そして清潔な2024年に乾杯しましょう。」と、コミッショナーのティッシュ氏は述べました。
