丁度１年前になりますが、ニューヨークタイムズのSCRATCHというコラムにイラストレーターとコラムニスト２人(画像左がイラスト担当ジュリア、右が記事担当のシャイナです。）による次のような特集がありました。

まだまだ不安定要素の残る社会情勢ですが、１年前の様子と今を比較しながら読みたいと思います。

The pandemic has created innumerable challenges for small businesses, and a new virus variant is making the future particularly murky.  As we look to the new year, we asked five small-business owners --- one from each New York City borough --- what their resolutions for 2022 were.

コロナ・パンデミックは、中小企業にとって数え切れないほどの課題を生み出し、新たなウイルスの変異種は、特に将来を不透明なものにしています。 新年を迎えるにあたり、ニューヨーク市の各区から1名ずつ、5名の中小企業経営者に新年の決意を聞いてみました。

（MisTyより：一般に日本語では、「新年の抱負」という言い方をしますが、この内容に沿うと「決意」のほうが強く感じられたので、以下「決意」にしました。）

"We try to give good service to the community with good prices so that everybody can afford to eat in here.  I make mostly Puerto Rican food --- arroz con pollo, mofongo, frituras.  My favorite dish is the chicken soup.  I want to make some new dishes next year, but I can't tell you what. I don't want to ruin the surprise." ---Jose Coto, 74, 188 CUCHIFRITOS, the Bronx

"As a small-business owner you're always working on something. I'm undergoing a major renovation.  Rather than over-the-counter sections where we'd sell greeting cards and food, we're going to a more professional model. We have a consultation room now where we do vaccines and talk to people about their medicine.

「小規模ビジネスの経営者は、みんな常に何かに取り組んでいます。ウチの薬局は今、大改装中です。 グリーティングカードや食品も売る、カウンター式の薬局というのではなく、もっと専門店的な感じにするつもりです。 今は、ワクチンを打ったり、薬のことを相談に乗れるような相談室を設けています。

"The pharmacists who are coming out of school now are a lot more prepared to be involved clinically with patients' medication therapy, rather than just being a robot and trying to fill as many prescriptions as you can. So in 2022, my goal will be to finish up what we started in 2021."

"I've owned the Westsider since 2002. We were slated to close in 2019, but there was a crowd funding campaign and we raised around $57,000 in a week and we were able to pay off the back rent and continue on. I tell myself I'm going to try new things starting in January. I wouldn't call them resolutions. More like gambits." --- Dorian Thornley, 53, --- WESTSIDER RARE AND USED BOOKS, Manhattan

「ウェストサイダー（本屋）は2002年から経営しています。2019年に閉店する予定でしたが、クラウドファンディングで1週間で57,000ドルほど集まり、家賃を返済して続けることが出来ました。1月から新しいことにチャレンジしようと自分に言い聞かせています。決意とは言いません。どちらかというと、糸口を探すようなものです」。--- ドリアン・ソーンリー、53歳、---ウェストサイダー希少古書店、マンハッタン

"The way things are going nowadays, it's very hard to set any goals. Bike shops have suffered a little bit from the supply chain shortages. And because there are so many bicycle shops in the neighborhood, not every company will allow you to sell their product because it becomes too competitive. A guy a half a mile away from me sells Trek bicycles, so Trek won't give me the account because their product is selling right down the block. My goal would be to reach out to a few more companies for 2022, so we can have more bicycles in stock."---David Dixon, 50, DIXON's Bicycle SHOP, Brooklyn

"We've been in business for 95 years. Every year I say I'm gonna retire, and I'm still here. I make resolutions every year. I say, 'I'm going to do it better and faster.' And I do it. And I always say,,I'm not going to run out of milk caramels' But sometimes I do."
