日本の「もみじ」と「紅葉（こうよう）」について、昨日の投稿の中に次のようなものがありました。（アリゾナ州から日本に観光に来たことのある方からのものです。）

We were in some of these places during fall leaf season a few years ago. I learned that the word "momiji" is specific to the red maple leaves, while the word "koyo" refers to the yellow leaves that appear before the momiji.

数年前、紅葉の季節に何カ所か名所に行きました。「モミジ」という言葉は赤いカエデの葉のことなのに、「コウヨウ」という言葉はモミジになる前の黄色い葉のことなのだと分かりました。

日本人でも、「もみじ」と「紅葉（こうよう）」の違いを説明するのは、なかなか難しいと思います。今日はそれを英語で説明できるようにしたいと思います。

毎年秋は日本が有名な赤い楓の葉を見せる絶好の季節です。このことは二つの異なる言葉で表されます。もみじと紅葉です。これらは漢字でかくとどちらも「紅葉」ですが、意味は異なっています。

get the chance to ～　→ 「～をする機会を得る」という言い方は、日本語でもフォーマルな場面でよく使われます。

showcase →本来は、見本として入れるガラスケースや、「見本市」といった意味で使われますが、ここではそれを動詞として使っています。「見本としてみせること」といったニュアンスです。

もみじとは、その時期に赤く染まるカエデの葉のことで、一方紅葉（こうよう）は葉が緑から赤へと色づく現象のことを言います。

refer to ～　→　「～について言及する」というフォーマルな言い方です。"to"は前置詞で後ろには名詞が来ます。"about"は使いません。

"人 + refer to A as B"で、「人がＡをＢと呼ぶ」という使い方もできます。

...., while .... →「～, while ・・・」で「～であるが、一方・・・」という使い方です。"while"以下の部分を前にもってくることもできます。フォーマルなライティングではよく使われる手法です。

corresponds to ～　→　「～に対応（相当）する」ですが、ちょっと使いにくい言い方なので、

としてもいいと思います。

日本の桜が世界的に有名である一方、もみじも国内で同じくらいに重要視されており、日本人は秋の伝統的な庭園を愛でるだけでなく、山々が赤く染まる景色を楽しむためハイキングに出かけることも好みます。
