It’s been a long and bumpy (でこぼこの多い)ride, albeit(~であるが) certainly a memorable one. But, as they say, all good things come to an end: the ubiquitous MetroCard machines that have been peppering(加える) our subway stations since 1999 are going to be phased out in “the not-so-distant future,” according to a tweet by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).

A toxic stew of programming snafus,(混乱状態) pivoting(方向を変える) priorities and management turnover has derailed (脱線させる)the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s $645M OMNY fare system, which is now years late and will cost another $130 million over budget, sources say and documents show.
All NYC subway stations are now getting OMNY vending machines
Is “the swipe” officially a thing of the past?

The death knell (悲しみの鐘の音)of the NYC MetroCard has been ringing for years now, with the announcement back in January 2021 that OMNY’s contactless payment system will replace the old-school (旧式の)subway cards by 2023. Well, 2023 is almost over and it looks like the big switch-over (切り替え)is finally happening.
OMNY vending machines will be installed (設置される)by the MTA at every subway station in New York City—yes, all 472 of them—starting at the following stations as of (~時点で)October 30, 2023.

MetroCards Are Currently Being Phased Out To Be Fully Replaced By OMNY

OMNY readers, which allow New Yorkers to "tap to pay" for their ride instead of swipe an iconic MetroCard, have officially been installed in every single subway station in NYC.
And that means, the end of the MetroCard is near.
The MTA first announced the news in late 2020, when they shared that they finished the OMNY roll-out (導入)right on schedule, even with the pandemic. And now, with a retrospective on NYC’s iconic MetroCard machines rolling out(予定より遅れて去る)to mark their last months in subway stations, it has been revealed that the full switch-over (切り替え)of MetroCard machines to OMNY vending machines is intended to place in 2024. Though, as you’ll see below, New Yorkers will have a little more time to hang on (しがみつく)to the classic yellow cards themselves.
OMNY was officially launched in May of 2019, and since then has reached one billion taps. Customers can simply tap their bank cards or phones (that have digital wallets) on the OMNY reader as they enter the station, instead of having to buy a MetroCard from the machine and add money to it. They claim it’s more convenient for riders, plus more environmentally-friendly.
