This column helped us connect with hundreds of people, often by just flagging （立ち止まらせる）them down on street corners.

We spoke to a fishmonger in New Orleans who sold worms to get an edge （優位に立つ）on the competition, a Montreal-based bagel baker who referred to his everything bagels as "all dressed," a cannabis （大麻の）farmer in Colorado who played rainforest music for his plants. We heard from an obsessive sneakerhead （スニーカー狂）and a guy who pranked （いたずらをする）scammers (詐欺師）. We spent the night at a 24-hour bodega where we tracked every sale from 8 pm to 4 am (a busy time for a corner store).

競合する相手に差をつけるためにミミズを販売しているニューオーリンズの魚屋、自身のベーグルを「上から下まで完璧」と表現するモントリオール在住のベーグル職人、植物に熱帯雨林の音楽を聞かせているコロラド州の大麻農家など、さまざまな人々と話をしました。また、スニーカーに異常なほど執着している人や、詐欺師にいたずらを仕掛ける人などにも話を聞きました。私たちは、24時間営業の食料雑貨店で夜を過ごし、午後8時から午前4時まで（この時間帯は街角の店にとって最も忙しい時間帯）に売れたものをすべて追跡しました。

Like Ms. Clarke, who emigrated to this country from Belize as a teenager and was trained to fit bras by a Hasidic woman in the Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, N.Y.

"After you interviewed me," Ms. Clarke told us recently, "I found out I had to move from my basement location. " She has since re-opened her shop on Atlantic Avenue." It was the biggest challenge," she said. "It's a little sad because I left that space after 14 years. But I moved here, and I have a staff of four. I built something beautiful."
