Protesters Flood Trump Tower Demanding Mahmoud Khalil’s Release

Dozens of activists with the group Jewish Voice for Peace were arrested during a pro-Palestinian protest that filled the atrium of president’s namesake Midtown building.

トランプ大統領の名前が由来となったミッドタウンのビルで、アトリウムを埋め尽くした親パレスチナ派の抗議デモの最中に、ユダヤ人平和の声（Jewish Voice for Peace）のメンバー数十人が逮捕された

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters overtook （占拠した）Trump Tower Thursday morning, staging a sit-in （座り込み）in the central atrium （アトリウム---吹き抜け）for over an hour in a colorful and chaotic （混とんとした）scene in the iconic location where Donald Trump famously descended （降りた）a golden elevator to announce he was running for president in 2015.

木曜日の朝、数百人のパレスチナ支持派のデモ参加者がトランプタワーを占拠し、様々な色があふれる光景の中、中央の吹き抜けで1時間以上にわたって座り込みを行いました。そこは、2015年にドナルド・トランプ氏が金色のエレベーターで降りてきて、大統領選への出馬を表明したことで有名になった象徴的な場所です。

With Trump now beginning his second term, the group there under the banner of the anti-Zionist group Jewish Voice for Peace moved into the space to call for an end to the war in Gaza and the release of detained （拘束されている）Columbia protester Mahmoud Khalil by federal authorities for his role in campus protests dedicated to the same cause.

トランプ氏が現在2期目を迎える中、反シオニスト団体「Jewish Voice for Peace：平和のためのユダヤ人の声」の横断幕の下に集まったこのグループは、ガザ地区での戦争の終結と、コロンビア人の反シオニスト、マフムード・ハリルの釈放を求めて、その場に入りました。彼は彼らと同じ目的をもって（コロンビア大学の）キャンパスで抗議活動を行っていたとして連邦当局に拘束されています。

👩"Zionist"（シオニスト）とは、シオン主義（パレスチナにユダヤ人の民族的拠点を設置しようとする思想・運動）の人たちのことです。

Patrons and workers looked on in confusion as waves of people entered the lobby at around 11:40 a.m. unfurling （広げる）banners and sitting down in the subterranean （地下の）cafeteria area, chanting（スローガンを繰り返す） “Release Mahmoud Khalil now!” as diners at the Trump Grill hastily picked up their belongings and moved to a table deeper inside the restaurant.

午前11時40分頃、人の波がロビーに次々と押し寄せ、横断幕を広げ、地下のカフェテリアエリアに座り込み、「マハムード・ハリルを今すぐ釈放せよ！」と叫びました。トランプ・グリルで食事をしていた人々は急いで荷物をまとめてレストランの奥のテーブルへと移動しました。このとき客と従業員は困惑の表情を浮かべていました。

Police briefly locked down Trump Tower, clearing the building of some employees and would-be spectators, while the demonstrators, who chanted over the building’s blaring soundtrack of the Beatles, Blues Traveler, and Billy Joel, were warned repeatedly they’d be arrested if they didn’t disperse. （追い散らす）

警察は一時的にトランプタワーを封鎖し、従業員や見物客と思われる人の一部を建物から退去させました。ビートルズ、ブルース・トラベラー、ビリー・ジョエルの音楽が大音量で鳴り響く中、叫び声を上げるデモ参加者たちに　警察は立ち去らないと逮捕すると繰り返し警告しました。

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Khalil at his university housing over the weekend. He is being detained in Louisiana while his attorneys fight for his release, and return to New York. 

移民税関捜査局（ICE）の捜査官は週末、ハリル氏を大学の寮で逮捕しました。 現在、ルイジアナ州で拘留されていますが、弁護士が釈放とニューヨークへの帰還を求めて争っています。

Khalil, who became a key spokesperson and mediator （調停役）last spring for the Pro-Palestinian encampments at Columbia University, has not been charged with any crime. 

ハリル氏は、昨年春にコロンビア大学構内でのパレスチナ人支援者たちのキャンプ設営における主要なスポークスマンおよび調停者となったのですが、いかなる犯罪の容疑もかけられていません。 

Trump administration officials say they have revoked （取り消した）his green card （永住ビザ）under an obscure （あいまいな）provision （規定）of the Immigration and Nationality Act （国籍法）that applies to people who present “potentially serious adverse（敵対的な） foreign policy consequences” — a move that the demonstrators see as a blatant （見え透いた）attempt to stifle （抑える）constitutionally （憲法上）protected free speech. 

トランプ政権当局者は、ハリル氏のグリーンカード（永住ビザ）を取り消したのは、「外交政策に敵対的な結果をもたらす可能性がある」とみなされる人々に適用される移民国籍法の曖昧な規定に基づくものだと述べています。この措置は、デモ参加者たちから、憲法で保護された言論の自由を封じようとする見え透いた試みと見られている。

Trump impersonator （モノマネ芸人）Neil Greenfield, who works just outside the building selling photo ops （記念撮影のチャンス）and came in to watch it, said he thought Khalil should be deported（国外通報）. 

建物のすぐ外でトランプ大統領のモノマネ芸人の二ール・グリーンフィールド氏は、（自分が入った）記念撮影で料金を取っていましたが、、何事かと建物に入って来て、ハリルは（トランプ大統領のモノマネで）国外追放されるべきだと考えていると言いました。

Trump Impersonator Performs Outside Trump Tower Following Grand Jury Indictment

The atrium of Trump Tower, which is a privately owned public space, is required under city rules to be open to anyone who walks in during its business hours. It houses establishments such as Trump Grill, Trump Cafe, Trump Sweets, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and multiple gift shops boosting Trump paraphernalia（小物）, luring（引き付ける） supporters of the president from far and wide.

私有の公共スペースであるトランプタワーの吹き抜けのロビーは、営業時間中は誰でも立ち入れるよう、市の規則で定められています。この吹き抜けのロビーには、トランプグリル、トランプカフェ、トランプスイーツ、グッチ、ルイ・ヴィトン、そしてトランプ大統領のグッズを販売する複数のギフトショップなどが入っており、大統領の支持者たちが遠方からも訪れています。

“I did find it a bit disturbing (動揺した）at first,” said a British tourist, who was visiting the United States for the first time and declined to give her name. She added, “everyone was very kind.”

「最初は少し動揺しました」と、初めて米国を訪れたという英国人観光客は語りました。名前は明かしませんでした。「でも、みんなとても親切でした」とも付け加えました。

Dozens of demonstrators were put in zip ties（結束バンド） and arrested by the NYPD, after repeated warnings they’d be arrested if they didn’t disperse. An NYPD source said that 98 people were arrested. Chief of Department John Chell told the New York Post they’d been charged with trespassing, obstructing（妨害する） governmental administration and resisting arrest. 

解散しなければ逮捕すると何度も警告された後、数十人のデモ参加者がニューヨーク市警により拘束され、逮捕されました。ニューヨーク市警の関係筋によると、98人が逮捕されたそうです。ジョン・チェル部長がニューヨーク・ポスト紙に話した内容では、彼らは不法侵入、行政妨害、公務執行妨害の容疑で起訴されたそうです。

👩ロイターによると、約150人が集結したそうです。

Police shuffled out the last demonstrator at around 1:15 p.m., nearly two hours after the protest began. Once the dust had settled, staff at the Trump Cafe passed out slices of pizza to building workers.

警察は午後1時15分頃、デモ開始から約2時間後に最後のデモ参加者を追い出しました。ひと段落すると、トランプ・カフェのスタッフがビルで働く人々にピザを配りました。

“They [were] very deceptive,” （巧妙な）one employee in a MAGA hat told another, adding he had seen a large group of people congregating （集まる） but thought they were with a tour group. “It was a sight to see.”

「彼らはとても巧妙にやってたよね。」と、MAGAハットをかぶった従業員が別の従業員に言いました。「大勢の人が集まっているのを見たが、ツアーグループだと思いましたよ。見ものだった。」と付け加えました。

By 2 p.m. security had reopened the building to the public.

午後2時までに警備は一般の人々に対して建物を再開しました。

👩Wikipediaに、「昨年４月、コロンビア大学でイスラエルによるガザ地区攻撃に抗議して学生らが構内にテントを設置、学部長室があるハミルトンホールに許可無く侵入・占拠し大学側にイスラエル軍関連企業との断絶を宣言することなどを求めた。 」とあります。

日本でも、最近「財務省解体」や、「消費税撤廃」をスローガンにして大規模な（３千人規模？）デモが起こったようです。政府はこうした状況だということをしっかり認識して欲しいですね。
