ボデガで猫を発見したときの驚き！なぜそこに猫がいるの？

晴れて、ボデガキャットが合法的に飼育でき、市のサービスも受けることができるようになりそうです。

ちゃんと店番をして、ネズミの被害から店を守ってくれている、猫ちゃんたちにとっては相応のサービスが提供されます。

今日は、PAVEMENT PIECESという情報サイトから、ボデガキャットについてのLauren Peacockによるエッセイを読みます。

There’s something so magical about finding something so unordinary inside of something ordinary. For some people, that is a pearl in an oyster（真珠貝）. For others it might be finding a four-leaf clover in a field of greens. But when you live in New York City and have limited access to mother nature, you start finding magic in other places. Like bodegas. 

平凡な物の中に非凡なものを見つけることには、何か不思議なものがある。ある人にとっては真珠貝の中の真珠を見つけることであるし、またある人にとっては緑の野原の中で四つ葉のクローバーを見つけることであるだろう。しかし、ニューヨーク市に住んでいて自然とのふれ合いが限られていると、人はその不思議を他の場所で見つけるようになる。例えば、ボデガだ。

Picture this, you’re walking into your favorite bodega to grab a bag of Flamin’ hot Cheetos. You freeze in your tracks, yank out（グイッと引き抜く） your headphones and squint （目を細めて見る）your eyes. Is that a cat sitting on the cash register? WTF!?!

想像してみて欲しい。お気に入りのボデガにフラミン・ホット・チートスの袋を買いにいく。突然足が止まり、ヘッドホンを引きはがし、目を細める。レジの上に猫が座っている？ えっ、どういうこと？！

👩‍🏫WTFは、"What the fuck"の略です。

Where did these cats come from? Why are they there? Do they sleep there once the shop closes at night? Are they fed? Do the owners even like having them there? Do the owners of the store consider them their pets? Do they bring them home with them? How do the customers react to seeing the cat? Are they excited or grossed out（ゾッとする）? Are they petting them or shouting “I’m allergic, asshole（非常に不愉快な）!”

この猫たちはどこから来たのか？なぜそこにいるのか？お店が閉店した後、店内で寝ていた？餌はもらってるのか？飼い主は好きで猫をそこに置いているのか？オーナーはペットと思っているのか？家に連れて帰るののか？店に来た人たちはそれを見たらどう反応するのだろう？大喜びするのか、それとも気持ち悪いと思うのか？彼らは猫をなでるのか、それとも「俺は猫アレルギーなんだよ、やめろよ！」と叫ぶのか？

Sarah Lohman, a culinary（料理の） “historian, author, and public speaker” recently taught an online class called The History of Bodegas & Bodega Cats at Brooklyn Brainery. Lohman said that to understand where bodega cats came from, we have to go back 12,000 years ago. When some humans stopped being hunter-gatherers and started farming. 

サラ・ローマンは料理の「歴史研究家、作家、講師」で、最近、ブルックリン・ブライナリーで、「ボデガとボデガの猫の歴史」というオンライン講座を開催した。ローマンは、猫がどうしてボデガで飼われるようになったかを知るためには、1万2000年前まで遡る必要があると述べている。それは人類の一部が狩猟をやめ、農業を始めた時期だ。

👩‍🏫「ブルックリン・ブライナリー「」は、アクセスしやすく、コミュニティ主導型で、クラウドソーシングを活用した教育サービスです。

“When you start farming, that means that you are storing food for long periods of time… but the biggest shift is that humanity was now storing grain.”  Lohman explained. “When you have big grain storage you begin to attract rodents（ネズミ等齧歯動物）, and if there’s a place that’s attracting rodents that means that it’s also attracting cats.” According to Lohman, humans welcomed the cats because it meant there were less rodents around. In fact, Lohman said that just the smell of cats can keep rodents away.  

「農業を始めるということは、人類は長期間に渡って食料を蓄えていた、つまり、穀物を蓄えていたということが最も大きな変化です」、「穀物を大量に貯蔵すると、ネズがそれに引かれてやってくるようになります。そして、ネズミを引き寄せる場所があったということは、猫もそこに引き寄せられたということになるのです」と、ローマンは説明した。ローマンによると、人類は猫を招き入れたのはネズミが減るからだ。実際、ローマンは「猫の臭いだけでもネズミはやってこない」と述べている。
