ボデガキャットの見事な働きぶり！?何もしなくてもお客さん大興奮！

ボデガキャットのエッセイ、３日目です。（PAVEMENT PIECESという情報誌より。ライターはLauren Peacockです。）

An avenue and a couple blocks down lives Gypsy.

大通りに出て数ブロック先にいくと、ジプシーが住んでいる家がある。

Gypsy sat guarding the white claws（爪） and I immediately laughed, thinking it was a good choice. She must have heard my internalized (内に秘められた）laugh because she stared at me with her beautiful but terrifying green eyes and long thin white whiskers（ひげ）. I quickly glanced over to the Dipsy Doodles to show her I’m not a threat. Just here for some photos and questions.

ジプシーは白い爪を指の間にしまって入れて座っていた。私は、よしよしそれでいいんだと思って、思わず笑ってしまった。押し殺したような私の笑いを聞いたのか、彼女は美しいけれど恐ろしい緑の瞳と長い細い白いひげを私の方に向け、じっと見つめてきた。私はすぐに（スナックの）ディプシー・ドゥードルズの方に目をやって、襲ったりしないよ、ただここにいるだけだからね、ということを見せた。

The owner is short（する話が短い） and simple about Gypsy. Gypsy is a good friendly（人懐っこい） cat, who doesn’t eat mice and sleeps at the bodega. She’s eight years old, adopted from a shelter, and likes to play a lot. “She’s always sweet（優しい） when I come in here,” shouts a lonely customer before quickly purchasing a lottery ticket and running out of the store. 

店のオーナーはジプシーについて簡潔に説明してくれた。ジプシーは優しくて人懐っこい猫で、ネズミを獲らず、ボデガで寝ている。保護施設から引き取られ、今８歳だ。遊ぶのが大好きだ。寂しそうなお客さんが入って来て、「私がここに来ると、ジプシーはいつも優しくしてくれるんだ」と言い、宝くじを買うとさっさと店を出て行った。 

A little ways away lives Smokey. You’ll see Smokey before you even enter the store because he’ll be patiently waiting for you at the door with his paws（爪のある足） gracefully（優雅に） inviting you to come in.

少し離れたところにはスモーキーが住んでいる。店に入るまでもなく、スモーキーは見つかるだろう。彼はドアの前で、前足を優雅に広げて、人を招き入れるように待っているからだ。

Mo Mahoub, one of the owners of the convenience store informs me that a different owner brought Smokey here as a kitty, and he is now four years old. He said that Smokey is a good friendly cat, and can sometimes be his best friend when he doesn’t poop（うんちをする） behind the fridge. 

ボデガのオーナーであるモウ・マホブは、別のオーナーが子猫だったスモーキーをここに連れてきたのだと教えてくれた。現在は4歳だ。彼はスモーキーが優しく人懐っこい猫で、冷蔵庫の後ろでウンチをしなければ最高の友達になれるんだけど言った。

Smokey is not only loved by Mahoub, but most of the customers who come into the store. 

スモーキーはマホブだけでなく、店に来るほとんどの顧客からも愛されている。

“Everyone loves him, he is now famous in this area,” said Mahoub. “Some customers don’t buy anything and just come to see the cat. Some come in surprised but happy to see the cat.”

「みんなが彼が大好きなんだ。今じゃこの界隈で有名だよ」、「お客さんの中には買い物のためじゃなくて、猫を見るために来るんだ。驚いて入ってくる人もいるけれど、猫を見て嬉しそうにしているよ。」とマホブは言った。

Mahoub said Smokey tried the working cat life, but it wasn’t for him. “One day there was a mouse, and we showed him. He just sniffed it and walked away,” Mahoub laughed.  Mahoub enlightened（～に教える） me that he considers Smokey both his friend and his pet, and sometimes takes him home with him.

マホブは、スモーキーが働いてくれるかなと試したことがあったそうだげ、彼の性に合わなかったそうだ。「一度ネズミを見せたことがあるんだよ。でもスモーキーは臭いを嗅いだだけでさっさと言ってしまったよ」、とマホブは笑った。マホブは、スモーキーを友人でありペットと思っていて、時々一緒に家に連れて帰るのだそうだ。

👩‍🏫猫好きなら、こんな姿を見たら、絶対お店に入ってしまいますよね。見事な客引きです。
