「演説は詩の世界だけれど、実際の政治は散文の世界で行われる」（クオモ氏）

ニューヨーク州知事の経歴をもつ、アンドリュー・クオモ氏は、今回マムダニ氏に敗れました。クオモ氏は、"While you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose.”(選挙運動は詩の中にあり、実際の統治は散文の中にある）つまり、選挙前は夢を語っていても、実際はそううまくいくものではない、ということを言っていました。

実際マムダニ氏に投票した人は過半数を少し上回るものでしたが、他の候補者を選んだ人が４割以上いることも現実です。公約として掲げているものにはすべて財源が必要で、それを富裕層の税金で賄うというと、富裕層はニューヨーク市から逃げ出すかもしれません。

New York will remain a city of immigrants: a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant.

ニューヨークは移民の街であり続けるでしょう。移民によって築かれ、移民によって支えられ、今夜からは移民によって導かれる街ですから。

So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to（人に悪影響を与える） any of us, you will have to get through（乗り越える） all of us. When we enter City Hall in 58 days, expectations will be high. We will meet them. A great New Yorker once said that while you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose（散文）.

👩🏼‍🏫“prose（散文）”は本来、韻をふまない飾らない文であり、それに韻を踏ませるというのは、「クオモ氏はそういうが、我々は単なる現実主義には陥らない。」というマムダニ氏の決意を表しています。

I am young, despite my best efforts to grow older. I am Muslim. I am a democratic socialist. And most damning （都合が悪い）of all, I refuse to apologize for any of this.

私は若いです。歳を取ろうと一生懸命努力しているのですが。私はイスラム教信者です。私は民主社会主義者です。そして何よりこのことに対して絶対に謝罪をしない人間です。

And yet, if tonight teaches us anything, it is that convention（因習） has held us back（押しとどめる）. We have bowed at the altar （祭壇） of caution (警告）, and we have paid a mighty price. Too many working people cannot recognize themselves in our party, and too many among us have turned to the right for answers to why they’ve been left behind.

Our greatness will be anything but（決して～ではない） abstract. It will be felt by every rent-stabilized （家賃が法規制で決められている）tenant who wakes up on the first of every month knowing the amount they’re going to pay hasn’t soared（急騰する） since the month before. It will be felt by each grandparent who can afford to stay in the home they have worked for, and whose grandchildren live nearby because the cost of child care didn’t send them to Long Island.

私たちの偉大さは決して抽象的なものではありません。賃貸規制対象の入居者一人ひとりが毎月１日に目を覚まして、前月と比べて家賃が急騰していないことを感じるでしょう。祖父母の皆さんは、苦労して築いた家に住み続けられ、保育料の高騰のために孫がロングアイランドに引っ越すというようなことがなく、近くに住んでいるとき、そのことを感じるでしょう。

👩🏼‍🏫マムダニ氏は、家賃について４年間の凍結としています。現在でも低所得者向け住宅では、"rent-stabilized"（家賃安定）規定があるので、むやみに家賃は上がることはありません。（こうした住居に入居するためには所得について審査があります。）

It will be felt by the single mother who is safe on her commute（通勤） and whose bus runs fast enough that she doesn’t have to rush school drop-off to make it to work on time. And it will be felt when New Yorkers open their newspapers in the morning and read headlines of success, not scandal.

通勤中に安全を確保でき、バスが十分に速く走っているため、仕事の開始時間に間に合うよう急いで子供を学校に送り届ける必要がなくなります。シングルマザーはそのことを実感するでしょう。そして、ニューヨーク市民は朝新聞を開き、スキャンダルではなく成功の見出しを読んでいることを実感するでしょう。

Most of all, it will be felt by each New Yorker when the city they love finally loves them back.

何よりも、愛する街がようやく彼らの愛に報いるとき、すべてのニューヨーク市民がそのことを実感するでしょう。

Together, New York, we’re going to freeze the (the audience responded "rent"). Together, New York, we’re going to make buses fast and (the audience responded "free"). Together, New York, we’re going to deliver universal (the audience responded "childcare.")
