これで安心！？ニューヨーク市内に公衆トイレが設置されます！

日本では、トイレを探し回って困るということはありませんね。コンビニには、わざわざ「トイレだけの使用でもどうぞ。」と書いてあるところもあります。それがアメリカでも当たり前だと思ってはいけません。ニューヨーク市では、カフェでもトイレを借りるのに気まずい交渉が必要なのです。

The new administration just announced a $4 million push（動き） to expand public bathroom access citywide, with plans to roll out（提供を開始する） a new generation of modular, self-cleaning restrooms that can be installed faster and cheaper than the brick-and-mortar versions New Yorkers are used to waiting years for.

新政権は市内の公衆トイレアクセス拡充に向け400万ドルを追加して投じる計画を発表しました。次世代モジュラー式自動洗浄トイレを導入する計画で、市民はレンガ造りトイレのように何年も待たされることなく、より速くかつ低コストで設置可能になります。

It means the bathrooms are prefabricated（プレハブ工法で建てる） units that are built off-site（現地外で） then delivered and installed as complete structures. Because they don’t require deep digging or complicated hookups（水道管との接続部） to existing sewer（下水道） lines, they can pop up in plazas, sidewalks and parks in a fraction（ごく少量） of the time traditional public restrooms take.

つまり、別の場所で製造されたユニットを完成品として搬入・設置する方式で行うのです。今までのように下水道との複雑な接続や、深く掘ったりする作業が必要なくなり、広場や歩道、公園などに従来の公衆トイレよりもはるかに短期間で設置できます。

Other cities like Los Angeles, Portland and Washington, D.C., have already gone this route, which cuts both costs and construction timelines. New York plans to follow suit （同様の措置を講じる）by issuing a request for proposals within Mamdani’s first 100 days in office and is hoping to bring 20 to 30 of these units across the five boroughs.

The new units will use automated cleaning systems that activate（作動する） after each use, washing down floors, walls and fixtures（作り付けの備品） and disinfecting（消毒する） high-touch（よく触られる） surfaces. Doors lock during the cleaning cycle, so the next person walks into a clean space. Some models also include hands-free everything (from flush to sink, soap and dryer) to cut down on germs（細菌） and maintenance headaches.

この新しいユニットでは使用する度に自動で作動するシステムが使われます。床や、壁、そのほかの場所を洗浄し、よく触る部分を消毒します。洗浄中はドアがロックされるので、次に利用する人が入るときは、清潔になっています。一部のモデルでは水洗、洗面、石鹸や乾燥まで全て触ることなく利用できます。そのことで細菌の拡散やメンテナンスのわずらわしさが軽減されます。

City officials say the modular（モジュールの） program will change the math（計算） fast, expanding access in high-traffic（人の出入りが多い） public spaces where bathrooms are basically an urban legend（都市伝説）.

市当局は、モジュール式を採用することで、今まで難しかった問題を早く解決し、都市伝説となっているような、人の出入りが多い公共の場所でのトイレが便利に使われるようになると言っています。
