日本語にしてしまうと、何のことだかさっぱり分からないという「オチ」があるダイアリーです。その部分はあえて日本語にせずにそのまま英語で書いてありますので、このストーリーの笑えるポイントを探してみましょう。

In 1979, I was a freshman in high school. On a warm spring day my friend and I took the Long Island Rail Road into the city to sign up for an American Youth Hostel bicycle tour.

1979年、僕は高校1年生だった。暖かい春の日、僕は友人とロングアイランド鉄道に乗って、アメリカン・ユースホステルの自転車ツアーに申し込むため、市内に向かった。

Having finished our business by noon, we looked around for someplace to eat. We saw a pizza place with a line of people out the door. The line was moving quickly, so we joined it.

正午までに用事を済ませ、食べるところを探していた。するとピザ屋の外に行列が出来ているのが見えた。その列は速く動いていたので、そこで並ぶことにした。

When I got to the front, I placed my order.

僕は先頭になったので注文をした。

“Two slices and a Coke,” I said.

「スライス2枚とコーラひとつ」と言った。

“Two slices, Coke,” the counterman repeated.

「スライス２枚とコーラ」と店員が注文を繰り返した。

Within an instant, the food was in front of me.

あっという間に、僕の目の前に注文したものが来た。

My friend ordered next.

次に僕の友人が注文した。

“I’ll have the same,” he said.

「I'll have the same。」と彼は言った。

“Same,” the counterman repeated.

「Sameね。」と店員は繰り返した。

 And then he ran through a door into the back.

そして、彼はドアを開けて奥へ走っていった。

My friend and I stood there for about a minute, wondering what was going on.

私と友人は1分ほどその場に立ち尽くし、どうしたんだろうと思った。

When the counterman reappeared, he had another man with him.

その店員が帰ってたのだが、別の男性と一緒だった。

“Here’s Sam,” he said.

そして、「Here's Sam.」と言った。
