How to Heal From Divorce? For One Writer, Friendship Was the Answer - The New York Times

Hang in there man. Yes as a single dad too there was not the support I hoped for. Most of my male friends didn't have a clue what to do and so did nothing. Like you I found wonderful pleasure in the time my children spent with me and that got me through. But now 10 years down that very tough road of being a single Dad I know exactly who my genuine friends are, male and female, and have made wonderful new friends too. The "mates" who sadly were not there when I needed them are now just "acquaintances". Their loss, not mine.

Does anyone else find it easier to turn to the second circle of friends, rather than the closest circle, in the toughest times? As I've been processing and moving on from a very difficult breakup, I've found it incredibly difficult to show up in any way for my "close" friends, or to ask for their support. Instead, I've turned to my casual friendships, where I find it's easier to be vulnerable as the stakes feel lower. Friendships do get us through, but sometimes it can be overwhelming to navigate our responsibilities to other people when we are struggling to meet the responsibilities we have to ourselves.

As a then 54 yr old man after my 2nd divorce I did talk a bit to my two good male friends but beyond that I soldiered on alone. I kept a lot if it to myself because I knew that no one wanted to hear me complain. I knew other guys would just tell me I needed to get laid.

The ways my friends supported and loved me through my divorce completely reoriented my attitude toward meaningful human connection and relationships. In my experience, romance comes and goes, but friends remain no matter what. My friends are the true loves of my life.

Single women learn early on how important friendships are, but we live in a world of couples, a world that is geared to it. Eating alone in restaurants, traveling alone, making decisions based on one, being self-reliant, all of it is a reminder of the continual emphasis on pairs, where friendships do take a back-seat. It's unfortunate that it takes a divorce to see the value of good friendships. I wish Maggie well on her journey and sharing it with us, and hope that it inspires others to think about how important it is to have a support system that goes beyond the nuclear family.

In life no single formula applies to all but a few things ring true: Friendships are essential and precious. Divorce can be liberating for some but heartbreaking and painful for most. To live with a spouse until death you do part is what we all expect on our wedding day and we are fortunate if we achieve it. The anniversary of my marriage with my late wife was 4 days ago. It was a few months short of our 55th. Some people recover from these major life changes; others never do. As I said there is no single formula for all.

I have wonderful friendships but they are scattered all over the country and the world at this point. Not everyone lives around the corner or even in the same city so no, I wouldn't have a crowd ready to walk with me at a moment's notice or to come to an ER etc. I wish I had. I work on my friendships and the women I am in relationships with are sterling human beings, but everyone seems stretched thin and somewhat preoccupied with their own pressures. I do envy the proximity and constant availability the author has with her tribe, I must admit.

My lovely wonderful brilliant public spirited wife has end stage Alzheimer's and my best friend has Parkinson's . My older brother died last year. So did two friends.   My oldest sister has cancer . I am riding an avalanche of pain. My children and grandchildren give me comfort and my work gives me purpose.  But some days you just want to scream at the universe.

IIn life no single formula applies to all but a few things ring true."(人生の中ですべてに当てはまる公式はない。 あなたに"a few things ring true."
