ニューヨーク市でバードウォッチングができると聞いて驚かれる方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。ジャマイカ・ベイは野生生物保護区であり国立公園でもあります。そこには渡り鳥を中心に325種以上の鳥類が生息しています。（6sqftの記事より）

セントラルパークを始めとして、プロスペクトパークなどの緑地では、野鳥観察会も開かれており、多くの野鳥愛好家が参加しています。

According to the NYC Bird Alliance, more than 400 species of birds — some rare — have been spotted in the city. There are so many birds, they are often listed by borough and then by park.

The NYC Bird Alliance offers a printable checklist of birds you might see in the city, categorized by type and seasonal occurrence. According to the checklist, some of the rarest birds spotted (so rare they don’t even include them because they’ve only been spotted once or twice) include the Pacific Loon, Wood Stork, and Black-throated Gray Warbler, among others.

Angie Co is an architect by profession and through studying NYC skyscrapers, she discovered birding in 2016. “It completely changed the way I thought about the city, felt in the city, accessed the city. It was a totally new education,” she said. “Birding just gripped me so heavily.”

She became more interested in how to build green and use bird-friendly building materials, which the city now requires thanks to the NYC Bird Alliance. Glass on buildings must now have a dot pattern so that birds don’t fly into it. The Alliance’s efforts also include “Lights Out” laws, green roofs, and preserving Jamaica Bay and the Ramble in Central Park.

“Migratory birds are of great ecological and economic value to this country and to other countries. They contribute to biological diversity,” writes the United States Environmental Protection Agency, “and bring tremendous enjoyment to millions of Americans who study, watch, feed, or hunt these birds throughout the United States and other countries.”

Artificial light at night affects the millions of birds that pass through New York City during their migration（渡り）. Birds rely on （頼りにする）natural light cues for their migration, navigation, communication, and reproduction（繁殖）. Artificial light pollution can disrupt（混乱させる）these behaviors, drawing them into the city and confusing them, making them more susceptible （影響を受けやすい）to collisions （衝突する）with windows and attacks by predators（捕食動物）.

NYC Bird Alliance is advocates（提唱者） for legislation （法律制定）that will reduce light at night during migration, to make the city more sustainable for birds and for people.
