2024年５月、都市未来センター(Center for an urban future) の常務理事のジョナサン・ボウルズ氏（Jonathan Bowles）は、ニューヨーク・デイリーニュースの論説で取り上げられた、不動産大手のフィッシャー・ブラザーズのウィンストン・フィッシャー氏（Winston Fisher）との対談の中で、名門の新しい大学を設立すれば、新たな雇用創出を促進し、長年にわたって市の人材パイプラインを強化できると述べました。

There’s a lot going right for New York City’s economy. Jobs are at an all-time high（過去最高）, housing demand is strong, and tourism is nearly back to 2019 levels. But as resilient （回復力がある） as New York has been, the city faces several new economic challenges in today’s post-pandemic world — from hybrid work and e-commerce to a sluggish （低迷している）recovery in several key industries — that could threaten our future competitiveness. New York’s leaders should respond as they have so many times in the past: with big ideas to reshape the city’s economy for a new era.

ニューヨーク市の経済は多くの点で順調です。雇用は過去最高水準にあり、住宅需要は堅調で、観光は2019年の水準にほぼ戻っています。しかし、ニューヨーク市はこれまでも非常にたくましくありましたが、現在のパンデミック後の世界では、ハイブリッドワークや電子商取引から、いくつかの主要産業の回復の遅れまで、市の将来の競争力を脅かす可能性のあるいくつかの新たな経済的課題に直面しています。ニューヨークのリーダーたちは、これまで何度もそうしてきたように、新しい時代に向けて市の経済を再構築する大きな構想をもって対応すべきです。

Creating a prestigious （一流の）new undergraduate university — or helping an existing university to significantly expand into a world-class institution — would help the city achieve two critical objectives. It would enable the city to continue attracting the highly educated, creative, and entrepreneurial （起業家精神にあふれた） young people who drive success in today’s economy. And it will help New York cultivate an engine （原動力）of job growth, helping to offset （埋め合わせる）employment declines in industries like retail, the arts, and manufacturing.

一流の新しい総合大学を創設すること、あるいは既存の大学が世界トップクラスの大学へと大きく発展するのを支援することは、ニューヨーク市が2つの重要な目標を達成するのに役立つでしょう。それは、今日の経済を成功に導く高度な教育を受け、創造性と起業家精神に富む若い人材をニューヨーク市に引き寄せることを可能にするでしょう。また、ニューヨーク市が雇用拡大の原動力を育成し、小売業、芸術、製造業などの産業における雇用減少を相殺するのに役立つでしょう。

In this Daily News op-ed, Jonathan Bowles and Winston Fisher argue that a new top-tier　（最高峰の） university would create hundreds — if not thousands — of new jobs, attract highly talented young people, and strengthen the foundations of the economy for what’s shaping up to be a vastly different economic landscape.
