ニューヨークのマンホールのデザインの様々な背景

日本のマンホールは、その土地の観光名所や、キャラクターもの、日本文化を代表するものなどがありますが、ニューヨークのマンホールも様々な背景を持っています。しかし、日本のようにその土地のPRを兼ねているものはほとんどないように思います。Untapped New Yorkから今日は３つ選んでみました。

6. Millenium Manhole Cover
ミレニアム・マンホールの蓋

In 2000, Con Edison sponsored a competition for a manhole cover celebrating the new millennium. Artist Karim Rashid won the competition, with the first of these manholes installed in front of the recruiting station （求人案内所）in Times Square. Said Rashid of the design “This is the perfect medium to express the message that energy and information, flowing in a super-highway （高速インターネット回線）beneath our feet, are making the world a smaller place. The morphing （何かへの変化）of the grid shows how the potential and importance of this vital link is growing.”

2000年、コン・エディソン(エネルギー会社のConsolidated Edison, Inc.,）は新千年紀を祝うマンホールの蓋のデザインコンペを主催しました。（工業デザイン）アーティストのカリム・ラシッドがコンペで優勝し、タイムズ・スクエアの求人案内所の前に最初のマンホールが設置されました。ラシッドはデザインについて次のように述べています。「これは、足元の高速インターネット回線を流れるエネルギーと情報が世界をより狭いものにしているというメッセージを完璧にあらわしているものです。変化しているグリッドは、これらのつながりの潜在性と重要性の高まりを示しています。」

7. Catskill Water
キャッツキル・ウォーター

The Catskill Water Manhole cover, which we found in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, refers to the aqueduct system (one of three in New York City) that brings fresh drinking water to the city. Built in 1915, the Catskill Aqueduct still brings water from the Catskills mountain down to Yonkers, where it is then distributed to places in New York City.

ブルックリン区プロスペクトハイツで見つけたキャッツキル・ウォーターマンホールカバーは、ニューヨーク市に新鮮な飲料水を供給する水路システム（ニューヨーク市には3つの水路システムがある）を指しています。1915年に建設されたキャッツキル水路は、現在でもキャッツキル山脈からヨンカーズに水を送り、水はそこからニューヨーク市内の各地に配水されています。

8. DPW 1874
DPW　1874

This DPW Sewer manhole located on Amsterdam Avenue near Columbia University has a date, 1874. It’s not as old as the Croton Aqueduct manhole but it’s one of the few that still have the date on it. DPW stands for Department of Public Works.

コロンビア大学近くのAmsterdam AvenueにあるDPW下水道マンホールには、1874年という日付が刻まれています。クロトン導水路のマンホールほど古くはありませんが、日付が残っているものは数少ないです。DPWは公共事業局（Department of Public Works）の略です。
