Amtrak（アムトラック）は、AmericaとTrackの２つの語からできた鉄道旅客輸送システムの通称です。米国連邦政府が出資する国営企業で、1971年に発足しました。本数は少なめですが全米を網羅する、都市を中心に結んでいる長距離列車です。どちらかというと飛行機での移動に代わる手段として利用されています。

今日は、先月28日から走っている、新型アセラと呼ばれているアムトラックについて、6sqftという不動産会社のサイトを読みます。

The fastest train in the United States is getting faster. This week, Amtrak will roll out （一般の利用に供する）the “NextGen” Acela, a new fleet（編成） of sleek（流線型の） trains traveling between Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. at 160 miles per hour, up from the Acela’s current 150 miles per hour. 

米国最速の列車がさらに高速化されています。今週、アムトラックは流線型の新型列車「次世代アセラ」を導入します。ボストン、ニューヨーク、ワシントンD.C.間を時速160マイル（約257km）で走行し、現行アセラの150マイル（約241km）から速度が上がります。

Not only will the trains move faster, but the NextGen Acela will also offer better onboard（車内の） features, including ergonomic（人間工学に基づいた） seating, extra legroom, large windows, high-speed WiFi, and new wayfinding（道案内） screens. The first day of service for the new trains is Thursday, August 28.

速度向上に加え、次世代アセラは人間工学に基づいた座席、広い足元スペース、大型窓、高速WiFi、新たな案内表示画面など、より優れた車内設備を提供します。新車両の運行開始日は8月28日（木）です。

“NextGen Acela is more than a new train—it’s an evolution of travel,” Amtrak President Roger Harris said. “History will be made with the debut of NextGen Acela as we launch a new standard for American train travel.”

「次世代アセラは単なる新型列車ではなく、移動手段の進化そのものです」、「次世代アセラのデビューは歴史的な瞬間となるでしょう。米国鉄道旅行の新たな基準を打ち立てるのです。」とアムトラックのロジャー・ハリス社長は述べました。

Manufactured by Alstom at their facility（施設） in Hornell, New York, five new trainsets will be in service initially, with all 28 new NextGen Acela trains introduced by 2027. Like all Acela trains, the trains are all business or first class.

アルストムがニューヨーク州ホーネルの工場で製造した新型車両5編成がまず運行を開始し、2027年までに全28編成の次世代アセラが導入されます。従来のアセラ同様、全車両がビジネスクラスまたはファーストクラス仕様です。

As of Tuesday, tickets for the inaugural（初の） NextGen trip, one-way from Boston to D.C., start at $217（値段が～ドルからでだ） for business and over $500 for first class.

火曜日現在、初運行となるボストン～ワシントンD.C.間の片道チケットは、ビジネスクラスが217ドル(約３万２千円）から、ファーストクラスが500ドル(約７万３千円）以上となっています。

The trains will hold 27 percent more seats per departure（一便）, allowing expanded weekday and weekend schedules. Thanks to a new tilt system, Acela rides will be smoother even at top speeds of 160 miles per hour, 10 mph faster than the current fleet.

列車は1便あたりの座席数を27％増やし、また、平日・週末の運行ダイヤを拡充します。新型傾斜システムにより、最高時速160マイル(約257㎞で、現行車両より10マイルー16㎞速い）でもアセラの乗り心地はより滑らかになります。

 👩‍🏫 “tilt system”(傾斜システム）というのは、列車がカーブにさしかかったとき、乗客にかかる遠心力を打ち消すよう、カーブの内と外の線路の高さを変え、車体を内側に傾斜させる運行のことです。

Passengers on the new Acela trains can expect elevated amenities, like high-speed 5G WiFi, individual power outlets（電源コンセント）, and reading lights at each seat. Wide ergonomic seating offers more legroom, and a winged（翼のある） privacy headrest adds to the comfort.

新型アセラでは、高速5G WiFi、各座席に個別電源コンセント、読書灯など、より充実した設備が利用可能です。広い人間工学設計の座席は足元スペースを拡大し、翼状のプライバシーヘッドレストが快適性を高めます。

Onboard, Cafe Acela will serve a range of fresh food and beverages, including new grab-and-go（テイクアウトの） self-service for easier checkout. Plus, there will be cart service during select departures.

車内ではカフェ・アセラがさまざまな新鮮な食品や飲料を提供し、新たなセルフサービス形式のテイクアウトメニューで決済を簡素化しており、さらに一部の便ではカートサービスも行なわれます。

First class will have a designated car at the front of the train, spacious seating, including some solo seats. Plus, riders will be offered at-seat meal service, with dishes from James Beard Award winner Stephen Starr.

先頭車両にファーストクラス専用車両を配置しています。広々とした座席には一人用のものもあり、ジェームズ・ビアード賞受賞シェフ、スティーブン・スター監修の料理を座席で提供します。

Acela is central to Amtrak’s fleet modernization plan, which features new Airo trains debuting on the Cascades, Northeast Regional, and East Coast routes, more efficient long-distance locomotives（機関車）, and upgraded interiors in coaches（普通客車）, dining cars, sleepers, and sightseer lounges.

アセラはアムトラックの車両近代化計画の中核です。この計画では、カスケード線、北東地域線、東海岸線に新型エアロ列車を導入し、長距離用機関車の効率化を図るとともに、普通車、食堂車、寝台車、観光ラウンジの車内設備を刷新しています。

👩‍🏫ニューヨーク市の地下鉄車両にKawasakiの文字を見たことがあります。(ブログでも取り上げたことがありました。）ほら、これ！

👩‍🏫日本の新幹線は、路線に寄りますが約285〜320km/h出ます。旅行ばかりでなく「日常の足」としても利用されていますね。

アムトラックは航空券のような価格変動があるので早期予約をしたほうがいいです。

新幹線の車内案内（英語）は、例えばこんな感じ。

"Ladies and gentlemen, we will soon make a brief stop at Shin-Yokohama. The doors will open on the right side.”

皆様、まもなく新横浜駅に短時間停車いたします。右側のドアが開きます。

アムトラックのアナウンスは、定型がなく、乗務員の個人色が出ます。例えばこんな感じ。

"Hey folks, we’re pulling into Denver soon!"

"If you look out to your left, you’ll see the mighty Colorado River carving its way through the canyon. Pretty spectacular, huh?"

[皆さ～ん！そろそろデンバーですよ！」

｢左側を見て！雄大なコロラド川ですよ。渓谷の間をぬって流れているんです。すごい眺めだよね？」

車内アナウンスにもお国柄が出ますね。(^_^)
