50周年といえば、ニューヨークマラソンや、マクドナルドのエッグマフィンも2021年に50周年を迎えました。テレビの教育番組である「セサミストリート」は2019年に50周年を迎えています。

ラップミュージックの誕生が50年前だったと聞くと少し驚きます。日本で広まったのがつい最近の様に感じるからです。

日本人にとって、ラップは反抗的なメッセージのようなイメージとファッションの特異性が印象的かもしれません。しかし、ニューヨークにとっては社会の歴史を代表する文化です。ニューヨークという背景があって初めてラップの真髄が理解されるのだと思います。

さて、メトロカードの発売が地下鉄の料金システムの移行と共に廃止になり、最後の限定版の２枚が話題になっています。昨日のブログでは、「アイス・スパイス」をフィーチャーしたものをご紹介しましたが、今日は、（アメリカのカレンダーで）本日21日に販売されるもう一人のラッパーについて、次の記事を読みます。

"Notorious B.I.G."（ノートリアス・B.I.G.）です！
"notorious"は、[noutɔ́ːriəs](ノウトーリアス)と読み、「ト」の部分にアクセントがあります。「悪名高い」という形容詞です。

"B.I.G."は、"Business Instead of Games'（ゲームではなくビジネス）の略で、「ビー・アイ・ジー」と読むのが正しいようですが、「ビッグ」とも呼ばれていたようです。

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --The MTA is honoring one of rap’s late （今は亡き）legends with a limited edition MetroCard on what would have been the star’s 50th birthday.

On Saturday, May 21, the MTA, in partnership with Rhino Entertainment, will release 50,000 limited edition MetroCards honoring Brooklyn rap legend Christopher Wallace, more commonly known as The Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls.

“The MTA is commemorating Biggie’s legacy with this special commemorative MetroCard,” said MTA Chair Janno Lieber. “I’m from Brooklyn, and he’s the man who coined （新しい言葉を作った）that amazing phrase, ‘spread love, it’s the Brooklyn way,’ and we want to thank the Notorious B.I.G. for his legacy, especially for Brooklyn, but for all of New York.”

ニューヨーク州ステイテンアイランド -- MTAは、ラップ界の伝説のスター、故クリストファー・ウォレスを讃え、彼の50歳の誕生日となったであろうと思われる日に、限定メトロカードを発売させていただきます。

5月21日（土）、MTAはライノ・エンターテインメントと提携し、ブルックリンの伝説的ラップ・アーティスト、クリストファー・ウォレス（通称ノートリアス・B.I.G.またはビギー・スモールズ）を称える限定メトロカード5万枚を発売します。

「都市交通局はこの特別記念メトロカードでビギーの遺産を讃えます。私はブルックリン出身で、彼は "愛を広める、それがブルックリンのやり方"という素晴らしいフレーズを作り出した人です。特にブルックリン、そしてニューヨーク全体のために、ノートリアス・B.I.G.の遺産に感謝したいと思います。」と都市交通局長のジャンノ・リーバー氏は言いました。

The 50,000 MetroCards will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis at vending machines in the following four Brooklyn stations at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, May 21.

“That’s Biggie’s home turf, （縄張り）and that’s where we’re selling these commemorative Notorious B.I.G. MetroCards,” Lieber said. “I dare say, they’re not going to last long, so move quickly and get yours.”

Widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time, Biggie Smalls was raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant in Central Brooklyn. The talented lyricist（作詞家）, known for popular songs like “Juicy” and “Big Poppa”, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting （走行中の車からの銃撃）in Los Angeles at age 24.
