How do you get your message across among the Times Square throng? Try turning up the steam.

AND now, the newest steamy special-effects sign in Times Square: a giant cup of instant soup. The 60-foot-high, red neon advertisement, for Nissin Cup Noodles, will inhabit a prime space in the middle of the north face of One Times Square.

That is the historic building that has long been the Eiffel Tower of outdoor advertising, with its electronic-headline "zipper" sign, its New Year's Eve ball-dropping extravaganza and its high-resolution Sony Jumbotron television screen.

Formerly owned by such landlords as The New York Times, Allied Chemical and Banque Nationale de Paris, the building was bought last March by Lehman Brothers as an investment property. The investment-banking house has rejected staidness in favor of attracting new advertisers to the building in a celebration of the legacy of Times Square's glitz, glamour and gaudiness.

Thus the soup sign. Steam -- which looks enough like smoke to make it a multipurpose special effect for outdoor advertisers -- has been the engine of many great Times Square super-signs, or "spectaculars," as they have traditionally been called. Unforgettable were the smoke rings from the old Camel sign, the aerosol blast from the giant Right Guard spray can and the puff from the giant Presto steam iron.

The new sign, like many previous ones, will tap into the network of live-steam lines that crisscross midtown Manhattan. As an advertising come-on, "steam isn't that expensive, but it's a tremendous attention-getter," said Richard M. Schaps, president of Van Wagner Communications Inc., which owns or operates 34 supersigns in the Times Square area and is the advertising representative for One Times Square.

Times Square's last steam-driven spectacular was the fuming cup of A.& P.'s Eight O'Clock Coffee that has been smoking away since its installation at West 46th Street in 1992, Mr. Schaps said.

Now, Van Wagner has signed a 10-year contract for the new sign with a consumer-products multinational, the Nissin Food Products Company Ltd. of Tokyo, and is creating the billboard spectacular with Nissin management and the Senkosha Advertising Company of Tokyo.

Since New Year's Eve, sharp-eyed pedestrians gazing up at One Times Square have been able to see a "Coming Soon!!" notice for the new sign for Cup Noodles. The name, which is intended to sound colloquial but has the flavor of a rough translation from the Japanese, is actually the trademark for Nissin's international brand of instant soup.

"This sign will be a symbol of Nissin's international strategy to develop the name of its product, Cup Noodles, as a world-famous brand," said Koki Ando, president of Nissin.

"It's a testament to the new Times Square that One Times Square is weighing in with fabulous new supersigns," said Gretchen Dykstra, president of the Times Square Business Improvement District. The conjunction of tourists, Broadway theaters, restaurants and an increasingly high-market office-building base "makes these signs a good bet for companies with a multipronged advertising strategy," Ms. Dykstra said.

"Unquestionably, along with the Broadway theaters, the signs are the greatest magnet that Times Square has," she added. Times Square spectaculars, something of a club for Japanese electronics companies in the 1980's, have been fashion- and entertainment-oriented in recent years, with the appearance of such advertisers as Tommy Hilfiger, Banana Republic, Liz Claiborne, Viacom and MTV.

"It's an arcane art, selling these signs," Mr. Schaps said. "It's a very special kind of sell. Companies are buying a high profile that helps them to sell worldwide. You have some very upscale companies here that are interested in reaching mass numbers."

Numbers they get. During the course of a year, 20 million tourists pass through Times Square, according to the Improvement District.

Mr. Schaps is negotiating to fill two other spaces on the north face of One Times Square. And the supersigning of the much-ballyhooed "new 42d Street" will be further assisted by Van Wagner and Lehman Brothers as they seek to sell space on One Times Square facing westward.

These planned super-sign locations will face the sites of the recently renovated New Victory Theater, the New Amsterdam Theater (to be renovated by the Walt Disney Company), and the Academy and Lyric Theaters (to be reclaimed by the producer Garth H. Drabinsky). One of the new sign locations is high enough on the building to be visible from across the Hudson River in New Jersey.

The spectaculars are not only of benefit to advertisers, but "they're like a money tree for the landlords," Ms. Dykstra said. Indeed. According to one advertising executive, the rental fees for Times Square spectaculars range from $30,000 to $130,000 a month; the signs themselves can cost from $100,000 to $3 million.

At the moment, the final design of the Cup Noodles sign, which one Times Square watcher estimated would cost Nissin $1 million and be installed this spring, is being debated. To be sure, steam will emanate from the back-lighted, neon-enhanced cup of soup, but the fabrication of extra show-stoppers like a giant robotic spoon -- and even a mobile noodle -- are, well, hotly debated.

As the giant poster on the building now suggests: watch this space.
