大都会のニューヨーク、マディソンスクェアパークで自然が保護されている。単独性蜂を知った。

マディソンスクェアパーク(Madison Square Park )で、"WHAT'S THIS?"（これはなんでしょう？）の看板を見つけました。

カメラを引いて、全体を撮ります。

蜂の巣箱( a bee hive )でした！

イメージが違うと思った方も多いでしょうね。この巣箱はいわゆる蜂蜜をとるミツバチの巣ではなく、単独性蜂( Solidary Bees ) の種である、「カベヌリバチ( mason bees )」と「ハキリバチ( leafcutter bees )」の巣です。これらの蜂は針を持っていません。

さて、看板の英語を書き写してみますね。

Madison Square Park cares about pollination. We have built and installed these bee houses to allow bees to hutch their eggs, develop, and form cocoons for winter hibernation.
マディソンスクェアパークは、受粉について考えています。私たちはこの巣箱を作って設置しました。蜂たちが卵を産み、育て、冬の間眠るさなぎを作れるように。

・ Solitary bees belly-flop onto blossoms collecting and carrying dry pollen all over their bodies. Females carry the most pollen.
単独性蜂はおなかを花に打ち付けて体中に花粉を体中につけて運びます。雌蜂が花粉を運びます。

・ In the nesting hole, the female removes the pollen gathered and adds it to a pollen loaf, which is a mixture of pollen and nectar used to feed her young.
巣穴で花粉を落とします。そして花蜜と混ぜて子供に与えます。

Madison Square Park Conservancy is licensed by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation to manage Madison Square Park and is responsible for raising 100% of the funds necessary to operate the park including the brilliant horticulture, park maintenance, sanitary, security, and programming.
