Easy-Access Moving Truck

What it is: Moving truck that opens from the side
Invented: 2018

When you think of moving trucks, you probably picture slogging all of the boxes and furniture onto a ramp through the back of the truck. However, Japan does things a little differently than American truck companies like Ford or Chevy. Moving trucks in Japan open from the side and from the back, allowing for maximum convenience.

Car Rain Protectors

What it is: Rain guards to keep rain and debris off your Prius’ windows
Invented: 2010

Window deflectors, also known as rain guards, are a common sight in Japan. They’re custom-fit to your car, and they keep rain from getting on the windows. These particular guards aren’t available in America.

These guards are aerodynamic and have clips to hold them in place (as opposed to using sticky tape, like a lot of similar products). These rain guards are perfect for anyone who is a little finicky about their car and wants to prevent as much debris from touching the windows as possible.

Turning Train Seats

What it is: Train seats that rotate
Invented: 2008

In Japan, rotating technology is very popular. Train seats are no exception, and train lines such as Shinkansen, a bullet train, allow you to rotate your seat around to face the window or other passengers, if you’re traveling in a group (probably not a good idea to randomly face strangers).

Rotating train seats are operated, at least on the Shinkansen (similar to CSX in America), using a lever under the seat that rotates up to 180 degrees. This isn’t the only place you can find such innovative seating. At the Sapphoro Dome stadium, located on Hokkaido Island, stadium bleachers rotate too.

Automatic Taxi Doors

What it is: Doors that open automatically

If you’e ever caught a cab in Japan, you’ll likely have been surprised that the door opens up for you. There’s no need to touch the handle, it simply extends out and invites you in. It’s an impressive novelty that actually serves several purposes.

Not only does it mean that you won’t have to touch a handle that multiple other people touch every day, but it acts as a form of hospitality, welcoming you in. It also encourages you to take the back seat and not sit next to the driver, which many people prefer.

Speed Poles for Cyclists

What it is: Metal poles to stop bicyclists from speeding
Invented: 2000s

Japan’s major cities are very crowded, and dangerous cycling at high speeds is something that could injure a lot of people, were it to get out of control. As Japan Times stated, Japan has been cracking down on reckless bicycling for years. One such measure taken was the installation of anti-speed poles.

These metal poles are placed in a sidewalk in a design that pretty much requires the cyclist to slow down and maneuver his or her way through. New traffic orders released in 2020 include fines of up to 50,000 yen ($471.43) if a cyclist repeatedly fails to heed safety rules.
