Genkan is a Japanese home feature that just makes sense. You can find this feature in the entryway of traditional Japanese homes, apartments, and buildings. The invention is a combination of doormat and porch. Its primary purpose is to give guests a space to remove their shoes before entering the home or building.

ゲンカン（玄関）とは、日本の住まいに特徴的な物で、理にかなっているものです。この特徴的なものは、日本の伝統的な家、アパート、建物の入口で見つけることができます。この発明は、ドアマットとポーチを組み合わせたものです。その主な目的は、お客様が家や建物に入る前に靴を脱ぐスペースを作ってあげることです。

Japanese people almost always remove their shoes before entering a house or apartment. The reason why is simple—shoes are dirty, and they don’t want to spread debris from the street into the home. The genkan is a way to make that household rule easy to fulfill.

日本人は、家やマンションに入る前に必ずと言っていいほど靴を脱ぎます。その理由は簡単で、靴は汚れていて、道に落ちているゴミを家の中に入れたくないからです。ゲンカンはこの家に関する決まりを簡単に守れるようにしているのものなのです。

Purity and cleanliness are two values that are very important in Japanese culture. Slippers are often worn inside the house instead of shoes, and there are even special slippers to be worn solely in the bathroom. Japanese toilet slippers are placed at the entrance of the bathroom.

純粋と清潔は、日本文化において非常に重要な価値観です。スリッパは家の中で靴の代わりに履くことが多く、トイレ専用のスリッパもあります。日本のトイレ用スリッパは、トイレの入り口に置かれています。

When you need to use the restroom, just change out of your indoor slippers and slip on the toilet ones. This is quite sensible when you think about it. Toilet slippers, which you take off when you leave the restroom, keep you from tracking bathroom germs to the rest of your house.

トイレに行くときは、室内用のスリッパからトイレ用のスリッパに履き替えるだけです。考えてみれば、これはとても理にかなっています。トイレから出るときに脱ぐトイレ用スリッパは、トイレの雑菌を家の中に持ち込むことを防いでくれるのです。

It’s no secret that the population in Japan is incredibly high, so space can be limited. Bathrooms are often very small in apartments and workplaces, so what happens if you don’t have room for a standalone sink?

日本は人口が非常に多いので、スペースが限られているのはご存じの通りです。マンションや職場のトイレは狭いので、独立した洗面台を置くスペースがない場合はどうしたらいいのでしょう？

Hygiene doesn’t need to be compromised when there’s a solution like this to hand. Believe it or not, this sink toilet actually exists. All you have to do is stand up, turn the tap on, and there you have it, a two-in-one solution that saves space and water.

こういったものがあれば、衛生面で妥協することはありません。信じられないかもしれませんが、このシンクトイレは実際に存在するのです。することは、立ったらレバーを引くだけです。一石二鳥でスペースと水の節約を実現します。

日本人には生活に根付いているので、不思議でも何でもないですね。かえって外国の人がどうしてこのアイデアを取り入れないかと思う程でしょう。英語でのディベートのテーマにもなりそうですよ。

障子や瓦、畳はもう取り上げるまでもなく少なくなってきているということでしょうか。
コタツや布団、温水便座は、すでに海外にも広まっているようですし。（コタツのアイデアは、ニューヨークがコロナで屋内飲食が禁止になっていた時、歩道の仮設ルームにコタツを設置しているレストランがありました。）
