日本は「お土産文化」と言われるほど、「お土産」が生活に根付いています。わざわざお土産用のお菓子の箱に、「〇〇に行ってきました」と書いてあるものさえあります。「手土産」、「冥土の土産に」という単語や表現もありますね。

このテーマで扱いたいと思ったものは結構たくさんありましたが、連休最後の特集の締めくくりを５つの「日本からのおみやげ」に絞りました。

These cute erasers are a fun back-to-school gift for the kids in your life (or just for you as an adult). These erasers are shaped like different types of sushi. They are made by Iwako Toys, and you can find them on Amazon. They are available in sets of six. 

このかわいい消しゴムは、子供たちのために（または大人のみなさんご自身のために）楽しい新学期の始まりのお土産です。この消しゴムは、さまざまな種類のお寿司の形をしています。イワコー製で、アマゾンで購入できます。6個セットで販売されています。

These erasers are safe, material-wise. They are free of phthalates, PVC, and lead. They are also recyclable. The sushi erasers also include a sushi cutting board. On Amazon, they are available for $7 for a one-pack of six. If you want to splurge and buy a two-pack, that will cost about $10.92.

Are you sick of messing around with the coffee machine in the morning just to get your daily pick-me-up? Buying a fancy machine might seem like a good investment, but if you were in Japan you could just buy these single-use coffee drip sachets instead.

朝、元気づけのコーヒーをコーヒーメーカーで淹れるのが面倒ではありませんか？高級なコーヒーメーカーを買うのにお金を使うのもいいかもしれませんが、もし日本にいたなら、代わりにこの使い捨てのドリップ袋を買うことができます。

All you need to do is pop one of these in your cup and pour in hot water. The water seeps through the coffee (which is premium quality, of course) and leaves you with a steaming hot cup of Joe with none of the clean-up.

According to the instructions, these should be worn at night and when you wake up in the morning your toes and feet will feel suitably refreshed. Whether that’s a true statement or not is open to debate, but we’ll leave that to the experts.

Unlike some other things we’ve discussed, Yakult is available in other countries. However, this healthy drink was born in Japan before it became an overseas sensation. These tiny little products are packed full of probiotics which can help to maintain gut health.

ヤクルトは、これまで述べてきたようなものとは異なり、他の国でも販売されています。しかし、この健康飲料は、海外で話題になる前に日本で生まれました。この小さな製品には、腸の健康を維持するのに役立つプロバイオティクス（細菌）がたくさん含まれています。

Drinking just one of these a day can improve digestion and keep nasty illnesses at bay. What’s more, they’re only around $4 a pack at store like Walmart. If Yakult isn’t part of your daily routine yet, it should be.

1日1本飲むだけで、消化がよくなり、不快な病気を遠ざけることができます。しかも、ウォールマートなどのお店では1パック4ドル程度で購入できます。ヤクルト習慣がまだない方は、ぜひ飲んでみてください。

ヤクルトは、「ヤクルトおばさん（レディ）」という呼び名があるほど、他の飲料とは違った売り方をしています。（女性に限定したこの配達システムは1963年に始まったようです。）以前はスクーターで家まで配達してくださる方をよく見かけました。（現在もつづいているらしいです。ただ、ヨーロッパや北米には配達システムはないそうです。）

Seirogan
正露丸

What It Is: Marble-like wood creosote medication used to treat gastrointestinal illnesses
これは何？：小石のような木クレオソートの薬で胃腸の病気を治すもの

Seirogan is a very familiar medicine to people in Japan. Seirogan doesn’t look like a typical pill; instead, it looks like solid black marbles. The medication is an effective treatment for common gastrointestinal disorders like diarrhea, loose stools, water poisoning, and food poisoning. 

正露丸は、日本ではとても身近な薬です。一般的な錠剤とは異なり、黒い固形のビー玉のような形をしています。この薬は、下痢や軟便、水あたり、食あたりなど、一般的な胃腸の病気に効果的な治療薬です。

The medication is a trademark of Taiko, a Japanese pharmaceutical company.
The main ingredient in Seirogan is wood creosote (also known as beechwood or wood-tar creosote). Years ago, before World War II, Seirogan was considered somewhat of a cure-all, and some even believed that it could cure tuberculosis. Now, however, it is primarily a medication to treat stomach problems.

この薬は、日本の製薬会社であるタイコー薬品の商標です。
正露丸の主成分は木クレオソート（別名：ブナノキ、その他の木のタールのクレオソート））です。戦前、正露丸は万能薬のようなものとして扱われ、結核を治すという説もありました。しかし、現在は主に胃腸の病気を治す薬として使われています。
