今日取り上げるのは、メットライフという大手保険会社がニューヨーク近代美術館と共に行っている、アルツハイマーや認知症を患っている人たちに対するサービスです。

高齢化が進む日本では、高齢者に対するサービスの在り方が今後ますます問題になっています。高齢化がかなりのスピードで進んでいる日本社会にとって行政だけに頼るサービスの提供は難しいでしょう。

今日ご紹介するプログラムでは、認知症の症状の進行を遅らせたり、予防効果を期待するというよりも、患者さんと彼らの身近な人たちとの関係をより良いものにしていくことが目的であるように思います。

今日は動画にしました。様々な問題を抱えながら生活していく家族が少しでも良い形でつながっていられる社会の例がはっきりした形で見えるからです。

This program is a gift. an unexpected gift.

And then the people who take us around, open up visions that we didn't see before, things that we didn't knew about before. So, it's just incredible.

And it's like in a way coming home, you know?

Yeah, because we've been here many times .over the last couple of years.

そして、私たちを連れて回ってくれる人たちがそれまで見えていなかったものの見方を教えてくれたり、知らなかった世界を開いてくれるんです。だから素晴らしいの。

Some of you know very well, you've seen many times, over the last couple of years.

And some of you are new to this program.

I just want to welcome you, but before I tell you anything about it. I'd like to go around, and just tell me one word that comes to your mind when you look at this.

One of the biggest joys, I guess, of leading a program like this is that you get to watch this interaction between couples because it's a program for people with dementia. They're going through some really difficult times. 

Yet while they're in the program, you just watch them. They're touching each other affectionately. They're laughing, they're telling jokes that sometimes they'll share with you, and sometimes they want to keep them to themselves.

You can see that you're treating them like valid important adults. You're treating them with the respect that adults deserve. And sometimes you can't even tell who is the person with dementia and who's the caregiver. That's really amazing because what it means that everyone is interacting on the same level. It's a level that's very high. It's an adult level. And with a little humor and a lot of openness, you just get around the obstacles that Alzheimer's presents.

See if I can describe this, but George today wasn't in such a good mood when we got here and it was very crowded and he just kind of didn't want to go and and was a little upset. And then the minute he started looking at the art, and Carrie pointed things out, he just got so involved in it. And he started looking for things himself. I was just thinking how it brought something for him. They brought something from inside out.

Today the other thing I really liked was seeing Hal respond to one of the works with music.

And Hal, what was your word?

Musical.

What did you say about musical?

I was gonna say "metallic", but musical's another good one.

Well, they got a lot of rhythms there.

And then even the triangles are very very musical.

To me it's very rhythmic and musical.

And the fact that he made that translation from pattern to music without being prompted is just amazing. It's such a perfect example of what you get with this audience. People are less afraid to give a wider interpretation.

What I find particularly is that it brings out the very best of their thinking that isn't gone.

We find that people are traveling from all over the five boroughs and even farther to come to this program because there really aren't enough programs like this out there.

 Museums that have access divisions already can very easily take something like this,and other places that at least have one dedicated person can learn from their local Alzheimer's Association or their local Medical Center about this population. That's really the most important first step and then to also talk directly with people with Alzheimer's and their caregivers about what's needed and then develop the program accordingly.

プログラム参加部門のある美術館は、このようなことを実践するのはとても簡単です。そうでない美術館でも少なくとも専任の担当者が1人いれば、地元のアルツハイマー協会や地元の医療センターに問い合わせれば、こうしたサービスが必要な人がどれぐらいいるかがわかります。それが最も重要な最初のステップです。それから後は、アルツハイマー病患者やその介護者に何が必要かを直接問いかけ、それに応じてプログラムを開発することが大切になります。

気分転換になるし、心が豊かになって、生きてるって気分になるのよ。

子供がたくさんいる社会も元気だけれど、高齢者がどんどん外で楽しめる社会も元気だと思います。
