① Beer for the Blind
目が見えない人のためのビール

When you think about it, it’s amazing that this hasn’t become more commonplace. Visually-impaired people aren’t able to distinguish one can from the other. Someone hoping to crack open an ice-cold soda might end up taking a swig of beer, which could be disastrous, depending on the person.

考えてみれば、これがなぜもっと広まらないのか驚くくらいです。視覚障害者は、缶と缶の区別がつきません。冷えたソーダ缶かと思ってプシュっと開けて、ビールをグッと飲んでしまったら、人によって大変なことになるかもしれません。

In Japan, brewers began stamping “Beer” in Braille onto aluminum cans. The practice began in 2006. People needing extra help with the label can feel for the Braille near the tab, reading it to make sure it’s their intended beverage. Here’s to hoping we see something this progressive and widespread in the States soon.

日本では、ビールメーカーがアルミ缶に点字で「Beer」と刻印するようになりました。始まったのは2006年です。特別な助けがないとラベルを見るのが大変な人は、タブの近くにある点字を触って自分が飲みたい飲みものだと確認することができるのです。これこそ先進的なもので早くアメリカでも広がるといいなと思うものです。

② DeliSofter
デリソフター

What It Is: Softens food to a consistency where teeth aren’t needed to chew it
どんなもの？：食べ物を噛むのに歯を必要としない硬さに柔らかくするもの

Soft diets are often prescribed to elderly people who, as they age, lose calcium in their teeth. Older teeth need softer food, and it can be hard to have a soft-food diet that still contains all the essential nutrients and vitamins that everyone, particularly vulnerable demographics, need.

歳をとるに従って、歯のカルシウムが失われる高齢者には食事を柔らかい物にするように言われることが多いですね。高齢者の歯には柔らかい食べ物が必要なのです。必須栄養素やビタミンをすべて含んだまま柔らかい食べ物の食事をするのは、だれでも、特に弱い立場の人には大変でしょう。

The DeliSofter, a Japanese invention, comes from Panasonic’s Game Changer Catapult. The deli-softer would help soften meals, creating an easy-to-eat meal for those with chewing and swallowing difficulties. The DeliSofter looks a lot like a rice cooker, and it costs $410, though it’s not clear when it will be available for mass purchase.

デリソフターは、パナソニックの「ゲームチェンジャー・カタパルト」（ホームページはこちらです。日本語です。）が生んだ日本発の発明品です。デリソフターは、食事を柔らかくすることで、咀嚼や嚥下が困難な方にも食べやすい食事を作ることができます。デリソフターは炊飯器によく似ていて、値段は410ドルですが、いつ大量に購入できるようになるかは明らかではありません。

③ Hot Food Vending Machines
温かい食べ物の自動販売機

What it is: Vending machine that gives you hot meals

Vending machines are more popular in Japan than pretty much any other country in the world. The Japanese National Tourism Organization credits that to the country’s low crime rates, as vending machines are rarely vandalized in Japan and can be left outside with no problem. Hot food vending machines are a newer invention for the on-the-go country.

日本では、大体、世界のどの国よりも自動販売機が普及しています。日本政府観光局は、日本では犯罪率が低いので、自販機が破壊されることはほとんどなく、外に置いておいても問題ないと説明しています。温かい食べ物の自販機は、持ち帰りの国にとってはなかった発明です。

Though you won’t see these in the aisles of Best Buy or Target, hot food vending machines in Japan serve hot meals 24/7. You just pick the hot meal that you want, the same way you’d use any vending machine, and you’ll get your food ASAP.

（アメリカの家電店である）ベストバイや（大手スーパーの）ターゲットの売り場では見かけませんが、日本の自動販売機では24時間いつでも温かい食事が楽しめます。好きなものを買いに行くのと同じように自販機を使えば、すぐに食べることができます。

④ Shower Dryers

What it is: Heating functions in Japanese bathrooms that dry your clothes

Japanese bathrooms are pretty high-tech, and this shower dryer is no exception. The bathroom heating function never lets you get cold. The bathroom thermostat for these shower dryers sends hot air through ceiling vents, warming up the bathroom.

日本のトイレはとてもハイテクですが、このシャワードライヤーも例外ではありません。浴室暖房機能があれば、決して寒いと感じないでしょう。このシャワードライヤーの浴室サーモスタットは、天井の吹き出し口から温風を送り込み、浴室を暖めます。

You can also set the controls for a drying function, which will dry out the bathroom and any clothes you might have. That’s right—you can hang-dry your clothes after a steaming hot shower, leave them for a half hour or so, and come back to find them perfectly dry after.

また、乾燥機能を設定することで、浴室内や衣類を乾燥させることもできます。そう、熱いシャワーを浴びた後、服をつるし、30分ほど放置して、帰ってきたら完璧に乾いている、ということが可能なのです。

日本のあちこちに自動販売機があるのは、犯罪率の低さが大きく関わっているのですね。この風景は、街の美観を損ねる物ではなく、安全な街の象徴なのかもしれません。
