ゴールデンウィークをいかがお過ごしでしょうか？
Talking New Yorkでは、ゴールデンウィーク特集として、ニューヨーク関連の話題を離れて、Investing Magazineというサイトから、”Brilliant inventions that only exist in Japan"（日本にしか存在しない素晴らしい発明）をお送りします。

日本にしかないものと言えば何を思い浮かべますか？Investing Magazineは、228も探し出していました。（中には、それはない！といった冗談のような製品や、今は違ってるよというもありましたが、許してあげましょう。）

その中から、テーマを設定してそれに基づいていくつか厳選したものを載せました。まず第一弾として、「意外に他の国にはないもの」です。楽しい英語表現や単語もいっぱいありますよ。

①  Umbrella Locks
  (カギのついた傘立て）

What it is: Works like a bike lock, but for your umbrella
Invented: 2018

使い方：自転車のカギのように使うが、傘用のもの。
発明年度：2018年

This one actually seems quite useful. We’ve all had umbrellas stolen (or we lost them but thought someone took them) at one point or another. Japanese malls and stores have invented a locking system that works like a bike lock, but it is used for umbrellas. You lock up your umbrella when you walk into the store.

これ、実はかなり便利みたいですよ。みんな、一度は傘を盗まれた（あるいは失くしたけど誰かに取られたと思った）経験があるでしょ。日本のショッピングモールやお店には、自転車のロックと同じようなカギがあるのですが、傘用なんです。店に入るときに傘をロックするんです。

Then, when you leave, you take it with you. Bonus: you don’t have to carry around a wet umbrella while you’re in the store—something you and the store owners can both be grateful for. Another added bonus—the invention is free.

そして、店を出るときには、忘れず傘を持ち帰られる。店内にいる間、濡れた傘を持ち歩く必要がないのです。自分も嬉しいしお店側も喜ぶ。さらにいいことに無料で利用できるの。

Considering it’s become a public service throughout Japan, this is the kind of upgrade we’d love to see in America. Especially in those perennially rainy sectors of the country (looking straight at you, Seattle).

日本では公共サービスとして定着していることを考えると、これはアメリカでも喜ばれると思います。特に、いつも雨の多い地方ではね。（シアトルの方、そうでしょ？）

②  Bathroom Child Seat 
 (トイレにある赤ちゃん用のシート）

What it is: A place to put your child

Japanese people really do think of every eventuality. Parents the world over know how difficult it can be juggling a baby and going to the bathroom when you’re using a public restroom, but Japan has finally done something about it. Baby seats have been situated in a lot of Japanese toilets for years now.

日本人は本当にあらゆる事態を想定しているんですね。世界中の親は、公衆トイレを利用するのが大変。赤ちゃんをあっちにやったりこっちにやったりしてトイレに行くはず。でも日本では念願かなってその備えが出来ました。トイレに何年も前からベビーシートがあるの。

Parents can pop their child into the seat and go about their business without having to hold their baby while they do it, or put them down on the dirty floor. It’s a simple invention but one that’s a stroke of genius for families.

赤ちゃんをポンとこのシートに座らせて用を足せば良いんです。赤ちゃんを抱っこしたり、汚れた床に下ろしたりしなくてもいい。シンプルな発明ですが、家族にとっては天才的で衝撃的な発明なのです。

③ Chewing Gum Mini Napkins

What it is: A container of gum that comes with tiny napkins

This invention is actually not very new. If you’ve ever been chewing a piece of gum that has lost its flavor, you know that you want to spit it out right away. However, there isn’t always a trash can or spare piece of paper nearby. Japanese inventors have solved that problem by including a pad of tiny paper in their gum canisters.

この発明は、実はあまり新しいものではありません。味がなくなったガムを噛んでいたら、すぐに吐き出したいと思うわよね。でに、近くにゴミ箱や紙切れがあるとは限りません。日本の発明家がその問題を解決してくれました。ガムのボトルに小さな紙を入れたのです。

This invention, which has yet to make it stateside to companies like Hershey’s and Mars, doesn’t increase the price of gum too much. Instead, this little post-it-note pad is practically free of charge (and a million times more convenient).

ガムの値段をそんなに上げるものではないのに、この発明はまだアメリカではハーシーズやマースといった会社に入って来ていません。でも、この小さなポストイットは実質無料なのよね。（そして100万倍便利！）。

④ Symbols for New (And Old) Drivers
運転手の初心者（高齢者）マーク

What it is: Stickers you have to place on your car to let other drivers know if you’re elderly, a new driver, or otherwise impaired

それって何？：高齢者、新米ドライバー、その他障害者であることを他のドライバーに知らせるために、車に貼らなければならないステッカー

Invented: 2000s
いつからあるの？：2000年代

This is a great idea and needs to be implemented in America. In Japan, there are legally-required stickers that drivers in certain classes have to place on their vehicles. If you’re elderly, a new driver, hearing impaired, or otherwise differently-abled, you have to put a sticker with a symbol on your car.

これは素晴らしいアイデアです。アメリカでも実施すべきです。日本には、特定のドライバーが車に貼らなければならない法律で定められたステッカーがあります。高齢者、新米ドライバー、聴覚障害者、その他の障がい者は、シンボルマークのステッカーを車に貼らなければなりません。

In Tokyo, there are even more specific stickers you have to place on your vehicle, including driver’s training marks that tell other drivers to beware of sudden stops or alert them that you’re practicing. When other drivers see these stickers in Japan, they know to give the car with them a wide berth.

東京では、さらに特殊なステッカーが貼られます。例えば、「急停車に注意」「練習中であることを他のドライバーに知らせる」という運転訓練マークです。このステッカーを見た他のドライバーは、このステッカーを貼っている車のそばには止めないようにするのです。
