公開討論の後、トランプ前大統領を支持する割合がバイデン大統領支持を上回ったため、以前から心配されていたバイデン大統領の年齢からくる弱さについての議論が熱を帯びてきています。

When I first heard of Trump being convicted of 34 felony （重罪）counts（訴因）, I was dumbfounded (非常に驚いた）. I am not an avid （熱烈な）follower of American politics, but I just knew that this wasn’t something normal. A former president of the United States and one of the main candidates for the upcoming elections being a convicted felon（重罪犯罪人） is something that simply makes no sense to me. Trump instantly declaring the verdict （評決）a “disgrace”（恥ずべきこと） is also something I simply don’t believe. My image of the former president is one of a liar and a deceiver（だます人）. I am abhorred（強く嫌う） that the most powerful country in the world has had people like this in power. The United States should take a deep look at itself and consider who is allowed to run the country.

The fact that utterly （全く）disgusts me is that he will never be behind bars（刑務所に入る）. The American democracy and legal system is one based on power, money and influence. As someone who will be able to vote in the United States in the future, I don’t think a single person should even consider voting for that man. I hope in the future, we will have world leaders that strive （努力する）to better the world, instead of ruining it.

トランプ氏が34の重罪の起訴について有罪判決を受けたと初めて聞いたとき、私は唖然とした。私はアメリカの政治を熱心に追っているわけではないが、これは普通のことではないと思った。元大統領であり、今度の選挙の主要候補者の一人であるトランプ氏が有罪判決を受けたというのは、私には理解できないことだった。トランプ氏が即座に評決を「恥ずべきこと」と断じたことも、私には信じられない。前大統領に対する私のイメージは、嘘つきで詐欺師というものだ。世界最強の国がこのような人物を政権に据えていたことを私は嫌悪している。米国は自らを深く見つめ直し、誰に国を運営させるかを考えるべきだ。

まったくうんざりさせられるのは、彼が決して刑務所に入ることがないという事実だ。アメリカの民主主義と法制度は、権力、経済力、影響力を基にしている。将来アメリカで投票できるようになる人間として、あの男に投票することを考える人は一人もいないと思う。将来、世界を破滅させるのではなく、世界をより良くするために努力する世界のリーダーが出てくることを願っている。

To be fair（公平に言って）, I'm not too surprised at the verdict（票決）. After proof of insurrection（暴動） and multiple pieces of evidence incriminating（有罪にする） him emerged, it was only a matter of time until the president was convicted（有罪となった）. Still, however, throughout the course of following this case, from controversies over jury selection to court conduct, I expected Mr. Trump to resist the felonies pressed against them. And so, when he declared the verdict a disgrace, I still held strong in my beliefs of our judicial system. 

Nevertheless, democracy falls in darkness, and although previous to this I would have supported Mr. Trump on his fiscal （財務上の）policies, his down-sliding on the basis of his multiple convictions makes me concerned not about the state of our legal system, but rather democracy, where continued polarization （両極化）between parties leads to people still supporting individuals who may not be in the best interest of the state. As of now（現在の所）, given the new（ニュースを見れば）, I don't think the presidential election will have its procedure swayed much, but I could definitely see Americans standing in the centrist （中道派の）middle ground sway（揺れる） towards the other side, not necessarily because of their beliefs, but rather because they do not wish to vote for Trump. I'm still concerned whether polls establish an accurate measurement of the election, I don't think they're representing accurately except in some cases.

公平に言って、私はこの判決にさほど驚いていない。私はこの判決にさほど驚いていない。暴動の証拠や彼を有罪にする複数の証拠が出てきた以上、大統領が有罪になるのは時間の問題だった。しかし、陪審員の人選をめぐる論争から法廷での行動まで、私はこの事件を追う過程で、トランプ氏が重罪を課されることに抵抗すると予想していた。だから、彼がこの評決を全く恥ずべきものだと言い放っても、私は司法制度が正しいと強く信じた。しかし、民主主義というのは暗闇の中に落ちるものであり、以前であれば、私は財政政策ではトランプ氏を支持していただろうが、複数の有罪判決が出てトランプ氏が完全に滑り落ちたことで、現在私は司法制度のあり方ではなく、政党間の二極化が続いて国家のためにならないかもしれない人物を人々が支持するようになるといった形の民主主義を憂慮している。今のところ、このニュースを見る限り、大統領選の手順が大きく揺らぐことはないと思うが、中道的な中間地点に立つアメリカ人が、必ずしも自分の信念のためではなく、むしろトランプに投票したくないという理由で、反対側に揺れることは間違いないようだ。世論調査が選挙の正確な予測法を確立しているかどうか、私はまだ心配しているおり、ある場合を除いては正確な結果を表していないと思う。

👩書いた人の年齢は書いてありませんが、ニューヨークタイムズの提案として若者に対してコメントを求めたものですから、おそらく十代後半が多いと思われます。

最近、日本のメディアの論説を読んでも、その中に書き手の人間性というものを感じられませんでしたが、今日は名前も顔も知らない、おそらく高校生であろうと思われる若者のコメントに感動しました。
