コロナワクチンでよく出てくる、FDAとはどんな組織？

ニューヨークの地元のスーパー、TRADE FAIRのことを書いたとき、肉に、"U.S.D.A.
"のマークがついていました。

コストコの精肉売り場のところでも見かけます。

これは、
the United States Department of Agriculture
の略で、『連邦農務省』のことです。
この機関が認めた肉ということを示しています。

最近ワクチン関連のニュースで、"F.D.A"をよく耳にしますね。実は、恥ずかしながら、"FDA"と"USDA"で混乱してしまい、なぜお肉のランクを承認する局がワクチンの承認をするんだろうと思っていました。

"USDA"の”D"は、”Department"の"D"。"A"は"Agriculture"の"A"。
"FDA"の"D"は、"Drug"の"D"。”A"は、"Administration"の"A"。

でした。

"FDA"の"F"は、確かに"Food"ですが、「口から入れる者は、すべて薬となる」といったとらえ方で、食品の安全性を管理しているのです。

ということで、"F.D.A."は、

Food and Drug Administration　　食品医薬品局

です。

FDA Mission
The Food and Drug Administration is responsible for protecting the public health by ensuring the safety, efficacy, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices; and by ensuring the safety of our nation's food supply, cosmetics, and products that emit radiation.

FDA(食品医薬局）の責務は、人間と動物に用いる薬品や生物学的製品、医療機器の安全性、有効性、安心を保証すること、また、食料品の供給や化粧品、電磁波を放出する製品についての安全性を保証することによって国民の健康を守ることである。

FDA also has responsibility for regulating the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of tobacco products to protect the public health and to reduce tobacco use by minors.

また、FDAは、国民の健康を守るため、そして未成年によるたばこの使用を減らすためにタバコの製造、販売、流通を規制する責務も有している。

FDA is responsible for advancing the public health by helping to speed innovations that make medical products more effective, safer, and more affordable and by helping the public get the accurate, science-based information they need to use medical products and foods to maintain and improve their health.

FDAは、医療品の有効性や安全性を高め、さらに手に入りやすくするための技術革新を加速させることによって国民の健康を促進し、国民が自分たちの健康を維持し、改善するために使う医療品や食品に対して、正しく、科学に基づいた情報を得られるよう支援することを責務としている。

FDA also plays a significant role in the Nation's counterterrorism capability. FDA fulfills this responsibility by ensuring the security of the food supply and by fostering development of medical products to respond to deliberate and naturally emerging public health threats.

また、FDAは、国家の反テロリズムの機能においても重要な役割を果たす。FDAは、食糧供給を保障し、国民の健康に対する脅威の意図的、また必然的な発生に対して医薬品の開発を促進することにより、この責務を全うするものである。
