昨日のブログでは、グランドセントラル駅ではじっくり時間をかけてねと言いました。他でもじっくり時間をかけてほしいところばかりなので、困ってしまうのですが、今日もまた、じっくり時間をかけてほしい場所です。自然史博物館です。

After much anticipation, the American Museum of Natural History has opened the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education and Innovation. The first thing you’ll notice as you enter are the enormous, interconnected off-white canyon-like walls that slope magnificently all around and above you—a subtle nod to the building’s big idea: that we are all linked through something bigger and more beautiful than us. 

待ちに待った、アメリカ自然史博物館のリチャード・ギルダー科学・教育・イノベーションセンターがオープンした。入って最初に目につくのは、巨大で相互につながったオフホワイトの渓谷のような壁で、周囲から頭上まで見事な曲面を作っている。私たちは皆、自分たちより大きく美しい何かによってつながっているのだという、この構造が表す思想に納得させられる。

The Gilder Center is home to awe-inspiring exhibitions like the popular Davis Family Butterfly Vivarium (a live butterfly habitat) and the Susan and Peter J. Solomon Family Insectarium, where you can get amazingly close to some of the coolest (and creepiest) bugs in the world.

Invisible Worlds, an immersive experience that aims to transport visitors to new realms like the 21st-century versions of the Museum’s habitat dioramas, is perhaps the most exciting and mesmerizing exhibit of the bunch. Intended to illustrate the different ways in which “all life on Earth is connected,” it offers an enchanting and emotional look at all links among living organisms at all scales—from the deepest parts of our oceans to the canopy of the rainforest to the satellites that orbit the Earth.

The pièce de résistance of Invisible Worlds is the 12-minute audiovisual kaleidoscope you’re immersed in after first encountering the main themes in an introductory gallery. You can expect to spend 30 to 45 minutes exploring the full exhibition, depending on just how much detail you want to dig into. These are the coolest parts that you definitely don’t want to miss:

Inside a lush terrarium tucked onto one side of the introductory gallery is an entire, miniature ecosystem that represents a snapshot of what you’ll find along the Amazon and its surrounding rainforest. Look closely—if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spy the bright pops of red, blue and yellow that make the three live poison dart frogs that call the terrarium home visible amid the layers of green and brown flora.

The ultimate social network? The human brain. On display just before the immersive show, against a stark white backdrop and bathed in a spotlight that allows you to see all the nooks and crannies, is a real human brain, donated to science by an 82-year-old woman when she died. Captions highlight the ways in which human brains compare to those of elephants and why ours are so dynamic even if they’re not quite as large—and the story continues in the immersive venue, where you can step into the network of neurons powering thought and emotion.

Unearth our origin story

During the immersive experience you’ll find yourself transfixed by the rapid, seamless network of roots at the foundation of one of Earth’s most biodiverse ecosystems. As you use your feet to direct the water flowing through, it’s impossible to not feel at one with the tree trunks that emerge from the ground as new life seeds itself, morphing into a sumptuous forest teeming with life.

この没入型体験をしていると、地球上で最も生物多様性のある生態系の基盤にある、迅速で継ぎ目のない根系のネットワークに目を奪われることだろう。（床の上に映し出される）水の流れを誘導する根の上を歩きまわれば、新しい生命の種として地面から現れる木の幹と根が生命に満ち溢れる壮麗な森へと劇的に変化することに一体感を感じないわけにはいかない。

Another moment in the loop focuses on a network of roots directing the flow of water underground. By walking around during this portion, viewers have a direct impact on the moving images on the floor, which created visually stunning patterns.

もう一つのデジタル体験は、地下の水の流れを導く根のネットワークに焦点を当てている。来館者は実際ここの場所を歩き回って、床の上に映し出された動く映像を直接体験することができる。目に見える見事な（木の根の）パターンができているのだ。

Take flight with migrating birds

As you float up from floor to canopy in a rainforest, a simply mesmerizing soundscape emerges as countless species from birds to bugs compete for attention. This vertical journey reveals organisms large and small until up above the treeline, a flock of birds move in stunning and hypnotizing unison through the sky, alternating colors as they chart a stunning, colorful course through the skies.

熱帯雨林の林床から樹冠へと自分の身を浮き上がらせると、ただ魅惑的な音の光景のみが現れる。鳥から虫まで数え切れないほどの種が注目を引こうと競い合っているのだ。こうして垂直に移動することで、樹林帯の上に至るまで大小の生物が見える。鳥の群れは上空で見る者を虜にするほど一斉に移動する。彼らは空に見事な色とりどりのコースを描くように色を変えていく。

Swim with a humpback whale

The presentation continues by transporting you into the sea as some of the ocean’s most majestic creatures move in search of their next meals. Surrounded by the billions of microscopic organisms that make up 90% of the ocean’s biomass, you’ll feel the water moving over and through you as a pod of dolphins darts hungrily into schools of fish, followed by the breathtaking sight of an enormous humpback whale gliding through the water in search of plankton.

プレゼンテーションの続きは、海洋で最も雄大な生き物たちが次の食事を求めて移動する海の中へと向かう。海のバイオマスの90％を占める何十億もの微細な生物に囲まれ、海の水が体の周りを動くのを感じるだろう。イルカの群れが貪欲に魚の群れに飛び込み、巨大なザトウクジラがプランクトンを求めて水中を滑空する息をのむような光景が続くからだ。

この記事の英語のレベルの高さに圧倒させられました。まるで自分が博物館にいるかのような臨場感あふれる英文でした。これを読むと自然史博物館のこの展示は絶対見逃せませんね。多分入館料が高いと思うけれどね。半日かけてじっくり見る価値があるでしょう。
