ユダヤ教では「ハヌカ」、アフリカ系アメリカンは「クワンザ」、キリスト教ではリスマスと、お祝いの仕方は、その人のルーツにより様々。いかにもニューヨークらしいです。

昨日、「クワンザ」についての記事を読んで、７つの原則のことを詳しく知ろうと思って今日は、昨日の続きの記事を載せることにしました。

①Umoja
Umoja means unity in Swahili.
Karenga defines this on his Kwanzaa website as: "To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race."

ウモジャ
ウモジャとはスワヒリ語で「統一／結束」を意味する。カレンガ教授は、クワンザのウェブサイトで次のように定義している。「家族、コミュニティー、国、人種の結束に向けて努力し、それを守ること」

② Kujichagulia
Or self-determination. This principle refers to defining, naming, creating and speaking for oneself.

クジチャングリア
英語では、"self-determination（民族自決）"にあたる。この原則では、その民族自身で定義し、名づけ、創造し、話すことを述べている。

MisTynによる補注：ロングマンの"self-determination"の定義はこうです。→"the right of the people of a particular country to govern themselves and to choose the type of government they will have" （一つの国の国民がが自分たちの政治を行い、自分たちの政府の形を決める権利）

③ Ujima
Translated as "collective work and responsibility," ujima refers to uplifting your community.
"To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together," Karenga writes.

ウジマ
英語に訳すと、 "collective work and responsibility"（力を合わせて働き、責任をみんなでとる）という意味である。ウジマはコミュニティーの活性化を唱っている。「我々のコミュニティーを共に築き、守り、兄妹たちの問題を自分の問題とし、一緒に解決していくこと」
であるとカレンガ教授は書いている。

④ Ujamaa
Cooperative economics. Similar to ujima, this principle refers to uplifting your community economically. "To build and maintain our own stores, shops and other businesses and to profit from them together," he writes.

ウジャマ
共同経済のこと。ウジマと似ているが、自分たちのコミュニティーの経済を向上させることである。「自分たちの店、商店、ビジネスを立てて維持し、利益は共有する。」とカレンガ教授は書いている。

⑤ Nia
Nia means purpose. Karenga expands on this principle with, "To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness."

ニア
ニアとは目的のことである。カレンガ教授はこの原則について次のように敷衍（ふえん）している。「共同の休息をとって、偉大な伝統を引き続けるよう自分たちのコミュニティーを構築し、発展させること」

⑥ Kuumba
Meaning "creativity," Karenga defines this principle as "To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it."

クンバ
クンバとは「創造」のことである。カレンガ教授はこの原則について次のように定義している。
「常に自分たちのできるやり方で、できるだけのことをし、コミュニティーを、受け継いだものより、さらに美しく有益なものにして次世代につないでいくこと」

⑦ Imani
The final principle translates to "faith."
Karenga defines this as faith in community, writing, "To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders and the righteousness and victory of our struggle."

イマニ
最後の原則を英語に訳すと"faith"（信頼）である。
カレンガ教授はこのことをコミュニティーにおける信頼とて定義し、次のように書いている。「自分たちの仲間、両親、先生、指導者、我々の闘いの正義と勝利をすべての心をもって信じることである。」

昨日のブログにもありましたが、クワンザは宗教ではありません。いわゆる神様や仏様を奉っているわけでもありません。アフリカ系アメリカ人が、長い歴史の中で自分たちが大切に守ってきたもの、またこれからも守っていかなければならないことを忘れないための、確認のような行事です。
