前回の「国際女性デイ」の後半になります。
新型コロナウィルス報道の中で、国際女性デイがあまり話題になりませんでしたが、３月は、女性月間です。記事を読んで、ジェンダーイクォリティーについて考えます。

International Women’s Day was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1977, but it was not until 1987 that Congress voted to expand the observance in the U.S. to the entire month of March. But America still lags behind much of the world in ways worth noting during any observance of women’s ongoing struggle for recognition and respect; for example, we’ve never had a woman serve as head of state.

「国際女性デイ」は、1977年に国連によって正式に承認されましたが、合衆国では1987年になって初めて議会で投票が行なわれて、３月を通してその期間とすることになりました。しかし、アメリカは、女性に対しての認識と尊敬のための闘いが続いている限り、注目すべきさまざまなところで、まだ世界に遅れをとっています。たとえばアメリカではまだ州知事になった女性がいません。

This year’s International Women’s Day comes as the world continues to fight the coronavirus pandemic, which has had a significant effect on women, “from being pushed into poverty, to loss of jobs as the informal economy shrinks, to an alarming spike in domestic violence and the unpaid care burden,” as UN Women describes in a press release.

今年の国際女性デイは、世界がコロナパンデミックと闘いを続けている最中となります。このことは女性に重大な影響を与えています。「貧困に押しやられることから、日常の経済の落ち込みの中での失業、家庭内暴力の急激な増大、無報酬の介護負担に至るまでね」と、国連女性機関(United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women)は、記者会見で述べています。

The 2021 theme is “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,” which will focus on the lack of gender equality in decision-making roles and public life. Learn more about this year’s International Women’s Day, as well as the UN’s Generation Equality campaign, here.
